On the season finale of Speechless: JJ pushes the family away as he prepares to leave for camp, Ray tries to change himself so girls will like him, and Jimmy and Dylan bond.
The episode opens with Mya driving Ray and JJ to their last day of school and her speed getting clocked on the radar gun by the cops. (This was a great callback to the pilot.)
At school Ray gets his Yearbook back and realizes that he has been rejected by every girl in his grade except one. When he catches up to her she says she only likes him as a friend.
Mya helps JJ pack for camp. She packs him seventy days of outfits for ten days at camp and takes all of Jimmy and Ray’s underwear so he will have seventy days worth. When Dylan asks why she packed JJ so many clothes when they can wash his clothes at camp, Kenneth says it’s because they can’t trust them to use detergent mild enough for JJ’s skin.
Dylan and Ray are worried about Mya because they thought she would be losing it over not seeing JJ all summer. Mya overhears them and says that JJ is going to get the send off he deserves and she is not letting her emotions get in the way of her that.
Dylan and Jimmy talk about how happy they are that JJ gets to go to camp because he deserves it. They are also upset that the rest of the family doesn’t get to do anything this summer because they spent all the family vacation money on camp for JJ. Jimmy tells Dylan that even though they can’t go somewhere fun, he will find a way to make the flight to drop JJ off at camp fun.
Next JJ’s therapist comes to do exercises with him to make sure his knee is ready for camp. She is surprised that JJ actually did the exercises she gave him because no one ever does them. When Kenneth asks if the knee is ready so JJ can head off to camp the therapist tells them how horrible camp was for her. When she finds out that JJ is going for ten weeks she asks him if he is nuts. She says that if he is close to his family camp will be a challenge which freaks JJ out. Then she asks Kenneth what he is doing this summer. ( Which was so inappropriate.)
Meanwhile, while at a stop light a girl in the car next to Dylan, Ray and Jimmy waves and smiles at Ray which surprises him. Ray realizes that all the girls that rejected him know him so he decides to go after girls who don’t know him. When Dylan brings up the point that once they get to know him the game is over, Ray says what if he’s not him and he is going to change everything about himself.
When everyone sits down as a family to have their last dinner together before JJ goes to camp Jimmy makes JJ’s favorite lasagna, Dylan makes JJ a dream catcher and Ray writes JJ a poem. Instead of enjoying the time with everyone JJ is a jerk to all of them ( I think it’s because what the therapist said to him freaked him out and he doesn’t want to be homesick when he goes to camp, so he’s pushing everyone away before he leaves.)
Mya, Jimmy, Ray, Dylan and Kenneth have an emergency family meeting. Jimmy realizes that JJ is picking fights to make it easier to leave. Mya says they can’t take the bait and get into a huge fight before JJ leaves for ten days.
Ray tells Dylan that he is going to pretend to be someone from his yearbook so girls will be into him. Jimmy comes in and tells Dylan that he can get them a layover so they can have a Mini vacation in the middle of their trip to drop off JJ at camp and she gets to pick where. Dylan decides she wants a layover in Miami.
When they get to the airport JJ tells Mya that he doesn’t want a big goodbye. Mya tells him it come with the package, if wants the world’s best Mom he has to have the big goodbye. She tells him that in a few hours he will have the whole summer to himself after she gets him settled into the cabin. JJ tells her he doesn’t want her to come. She says he doesn’t mean that but when he says he does Mya leaves.
Jimmy calls Mya and tells her to comeback to the airport. She says she’s not going to because she wants to give JJ the best goodbye she can, even if that means she will not be there. On the plane Ray says he found the guy he wants to be, Eban Dryer because he has no yearbook photo and that makes everyone interested because of the mystery.
When the flight attendant asks Ray if he wants pretzels or peanuts, he says I don’t know you tell me, which causes her to give him both. This makes Ray think that if he does the same thing in a romantic situation he would have two girlfriends.
Kenneth is surprised to find Mya at home when comes in to stay at the DiMeo’s house while they are gone without them knowing. When Kenneth asks why she is home Mya says JJ didn’t want her. Kenneth tells her that JJ needs her and she says no he doesn’t because she has prepared him.
Meanwhile, Dylan and Jimmy go on an adventure in Miami while Ray stays behind in the airport with JJ. When the airport restaurant that was the reason for the layover in Miami is closed Dylan tells Jimmy it’s ok and she knows he will make it fun. Jimmy gets frustrated and says for once he wishes he didn’t have to make it fun and it just was fun. Dylan comes up with an idea and they stick their heads out of a taxi and go to the beach together. ( I thought this was a really sweet moment.)
Back at the DiMeo house, Kenneth tells Mya that she is going to camp to say goodbye to JJ because JJ is not a “disabled” boy he is just a boy. He will push back and that JJ’s biggest fits of stubbornness come before his biggest spurts of growth. Which is what Mya said in her JJ care book. (Another great callback to the pilot.) After hearing Kenneth’s speech Mya decides to go and is bringing Kenneth with her. Which causes him to have to happily cancel on JJ’s (crazy) therapist.
When Ray, Dylan, Jimmy and JJ get to camp the person checking JJ in says Mya called a lot asking a lot of questions and he asks where Mya is. When they get into the cabin JJ asks Jimmy to tell him he will be ok and to give him a speech like Mya would. He tries to but he can’t. When Mya and Kenneth arrive at the airport they find a police officer who says he would like to help but warns them he doesn’t have a car. Back at camp Ray helps a girl named Taylor unfold a wheelchair for her brother and she asks Ray if he would like to walk with her and he says sure.
Later that night at the Bonfire we find out that Mya and Kenneth got a ride from the cop on a helicopter. Mya apologizes for coming because she knows JJ didn’t want her there but says she needed to come for herself. JJ tells her that he does want her there and apologizes to everyone for being a jerk. Ray kisses Taylor and they agree to be each other’s Summer Pen Pal Boyfriend and girlfriend.
Overall all I thought this episode was a great season finale.
