No, not really. Wouldn’t that be insane, though? Maybe a little shark-jumpy but whatever.
That’s the impression I got from the promos that aired during the awfully sweet Office and hilarious Parks and Recreation. The episode proved to be not shark-jumpy at all and was quite enjoyable.
Jack meets the head of Kabletown and passes of employee suggestions as his own. Meanwhile, Liz pretends to be pregnant so that Avery’s pregnancy can continue to go unnoticed by NBC.
Former MTV VJ Vanessa Minnillo guest starred as Carmen Chao, Avery’s professional rival for indeterminate ethnicity. Chao relentlessly pursues Liz in an effort to expose her sham pregnancy and reveal that Avery is the real mom-to-be. Minnillo certainly wasn’t terrible but not all that great, either. Her shining moment was a scene featuring her showcasing her many flawless accents during a news report. Other than that, she seemed better suited for the Mean Girls sequel especially as she tried her best to look disgusted in her final scene. Again, she was adequate but she can’t feign disgust quite like Kaitlin Olson from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Learn to dry heave!
A fun relationship that often goes neglected by the writers (at least recently) is the one between Jack and Kenneth. After presenting one of Kenneth’s ideas as his own to his new boss, Jack is overcome with guilt. It’s interesting to see power struggles between the two, even though Kenneth is usually completely oblivious.
As of late, it seems as though these episodes of 30 Rock are fantastic episodes that stand on their own but make for a lackluster season. I like to compare everything to music, so we’ll pretend that seasons of 30 Rock are albums. Albums (and seasons of television) are much better with peaks and valleys. Songs are more interesting with cool dynamics, going from loud to quiet to loud to quiet. This current season has less dynamics, almost as though it was made for a wider, less involved audience (like song mixes are tinkered with before they hit radio). I have to say, though, that this in no way means that 30 Rock is having a bad season.
