This supercut of Academy Award nominees for 2018 is something that’s kind of hard to believe but isn’t too hard to accept. Phantom Thread, The Shape of Water, Dunkirk, and even I, Tonya seemed poised to take a lot of them for some reason while others like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Darkest Hour are being left in the dust. I’m not too surprised with the way that critics have been pouncing on some films like jackals and treating others as though they’re made from fine china and need to be handled with care. In fact I’m surprised that Logan was even put into the mix since the reviews were kind of uncertain. To completely snub Wonder Woman though is kind of a mystery I don’t fully understand.
There were a lot of films made last year and understandably they can’t and won’t all get awards. But some of those that were left off the list in favor of those that were put on it are a bit confusing since the films were all great in their own way. But really, some films just outshone the others in terms of effects, acting, and overall experience. Like so many others I really want to know what’s going through the minds of the judges when it comes down to deciding who wins and when it’s bound to become anything other than a popularity contest and go on merit. If you thought that this was a fair contest then it’s possible you might think the WWE is real as well, since all the justification in the world won’t make the Academy Awards a fair nod towards anyone other than those that the judges are feeling favorable towards. It might be hard to go off of merit alone but there have definitely been some films throughout the years that blew people away when they won, and others that confused people greatly when they weren’t even mentioned.
Putting the artistic part of it aside for the moment, the acting in many of the films that are nominated is great. But the snubs are becoming something that people are starting to seriously question since the biggest one, Wonder Woman, was such a box office hit that she should have been able to punch a one-way ticket to a nomination. Forget the feminism aspect that so many people wanted to harp about, this was a quality flick that did a good job introducing one of the worlds most favorite superhero’s into the mix finally. She’d already been a part of the stinker that was Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but I would hope that this wouldn’t count against her when she starred in her own movie.
The Academy Awards are considered to be the pinnacle of an actor’s career, something to strive for that defines them and validates everything they’ve done. But quite honestly it’s become such a rigged thing that I would hope that actors would see beyond this anymore. The fact that they get paid to do what they love and have legions of adoring fans should be reward enough.
