20 Original and Amusing Kentucky Derby Horse Names throughout History

Are you aware that the Kentucky Derby is this Saturday May 6th?  The horses have absolutely no clue.  Coverage will be starting at 2:30pm EST on NBC.   Of all the races in the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby is considered the prized contest.  It’s like the Wimbledon of horse racing.   Millions of people watch the race and thousands are in attendance.  The Kentucky Derby is widely considered one of the biggest sporting events of the year attracting celebrities, the super wealthy, and thousands of fans who just want to party in the infield.

And party people do, big time.  Other than Mardi Gras The Kentucky Derby is one of the biggest parties in the United States year after year.  People travel from all over the world to Louisville, Kentucky to wear fancy clothes, crazy hats, and get their Derby on.  However, like I said, I’m pretty sure that the horses don’t have a clue what’s going on here.

Is that why they get such funny names?  Do owners just like mocking their horses?  You’d have to think that some names of horses simply came from an owner partying too hard one night, making up a silly name and all of a sudden some poor horse is named “Mr. Hot Stuff.”  Speaking of funny names, here’s a solid list of 20 great horse names throughout Derby history.
