10 Things You Didn’t Know about the Movie “Green Lantern”

So let’s get this out in the open when discussing the movie Green Lantern and how badly it performed in the box office. The story itself is pretty awesome, and the actors they got to play the main parts are still great. So what went wrong? Let’s see, EVERYTHING.  The CGI was a joke and way overused, the idea that no one would know who Hal Jordan was with a simple eye mask was ridiculous back in the comics, and even more so in a live action movie. The film really just barely scratched the surface of the character and rushed it along to make sure that a plot could be squeezed into a two-hour time frame, and it was not the character for Ryan Reynolds to play. In short, Green Lantern was so entirely underwhelming that it was one of the worst box office flops in semi-recent history. Other than that, the buildup to the movie was incredible, but the follow through was something right out of a slapstick comedy.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way….

10. Ryan Reynolds met his wife on the set of this movie.

He and Blake Lively met on the set and were married in 2012 and had a child by 2014.

9. Reynolds wasn’t entirely pleased with the making of this movie.

He and the director clashed a lot since Reynolds wasn’t the actor that the director initially wanted. Ryan was actually reported as being glad when the movie tanked since he wouldn’t ever do it again.

8. Kevin Smith was offered a chance to write this movie.

He wasn’t impressed with the idea and passed on it. If a guy like Kevin Smith passes on a comic book movie it’s not a good endorsement.

7. There was almost a cameo by Superman.

It was going to be something that might have sparked the beginning of the Justice League but it was eventually scrapped.

6. Blake Lively ad-libbed one of her most telling lines.

She tells Hal Jordan that she’s seen him naked, so covering up his cheekbones with a mask wasn’t going to fool her.

5. Michael Clarke Duncan was a big fan of Green Lantern.

He played the Green Lantern Kilowog, one of Hal’s trainers, and was one of the tougher characters in the movie.

4. The film Deadpool makes a jab at Green Lantern.

When he makes the quip about not making the super suit green or animated that’s an obvious dig at his role in Green Lantern.

3. The Green Lantern costumes is entirely CGI.

It was an interesting direction to go in since the director explained it gave the impression that the Green Lanterns were garbed in a suit made from their own indomitable will.

2. Quentin Tarantino was considered to direct this film.

Can you imagine how that would have gone? Parallax wouldn’t have just killed people, he probably would have been lopping heads off or burning them alive along the way.

1. This was supposed to be the starting point of the DCEU’s current push.

Initially this was going to be the film that got the Justice League and everything else going. But when it bombed that idea was scrapped until Man of Steel came out.

It was just all bad, let’s leave it at that.
