The Big Hit was nothing special to be honest. You can say whatever you want to about this movie but the truth is that it wasn’t that great and what special mojo it did have revolved around the frantic action sequences that it doled out so sparingly. Forget the fact that it did feature four popular movie stars that would supposedly have a future after this action stinker and you could almost forgive it for not being that great, but squandering talent such as this and in such a dumb way was kind of hard to stomach. Still, it wasn’t the worst movie ever made and that’s something. But the entire premise of The Big Hit was based around a kidnapping, which a lot of people tended to forget whenever the fighting got started. And plus, the name of the film is kind of misleading.
Should I assume a lot of you might not have cared to know a lot about this film?
10. Keiko, the young girl that was kidnapped, was supposed to be a high school student originally.
The studio was going to make this a kind of tribute to the anime crowd by keeping her as a high school student, but later on thought that might be too much of a risk.
9. Shooting the chase scene shut down a public park for about two weeks.
The park was up in Toronto, Canada, and during the filming of the chase scene it had to be closed for safety reasons. A lot of people were understandably upset.
8. The annoying video store kid was only supposed to be a voice-over to start with.
At some point the director and the producers thought it would be a good idea to include his parts as kind of a gag to complete the story just a bit.
7. Bokeem Woodbine stuffed socks down the front of his pants as a practical joke.
It’s kind of hard to imagine what he was trying to do with this gag, and who it was supposed to fool.
6. Jason Scott Lee almost got the part of Melvin.
In terms of the fight sequences he might have been a little better, but the acting would have been about the same.
5. The part of Melvin was actually written for Martin Lawrence.
Nothing against Martin Lawrence but this really didn’t seem like his kind of movie, and he doesn’t seem like the acrobatic type.
4. Christina Applegate wasn’t the first choice for the role of Pam.
She might not have been the first choice but she was definitely the best choice.
3. Melvin was supposed to have more of a back story.
It was supposed to go into further detail about Melvin’s fear of not being liked by people and why his parents were both dead. It was nixed due to time constraints.
2. This was one of Mark Wahlberg’s first real roles as an action star.
He’d been in a number of productions before but this was one of the few movies in which he really got to flex his muscles as an action star for the first time.
1. The actress playing Keiko is the daughter of a famous restaurateur.
In the movie she says she doesn’t really know how to cook, so it’s kind of ironic since her father is a well known restaurateur.
Personally I liked the fight sequences in the movie and the humor, but aside from that it was nothing to write home about.
