From the best to the worst, cosplay is without a doubt a popular pastime among fans of science fiction and fantasy genres alike. Whether a person dresses as their favorite superhero or a villain, there is no limit to the imagination when it comes to designing and flaunting the dedication a person has to their favorite movie, show, or comic. But when it comes to the always popular hit HBO series “Game of Thrones” the bar is often set so ridiculously high that many find themselves staring in awe at those who show the greatest attention to detail.
Whether a fan admires the graceful and striking figure of Danaerys, mother of dragons, or the more simple yet powerful figure of Brienne of Tarth, “Game of Thrones” enthusiasts are well known for their sometimes overpowering and always impressive displays of fandom. The typical “Game of Thrones” costume is usually quite noticeable and easy enough to spot, but for those on this list, there is no denying that they have in essence become their favorite characters in some way. Each one of them has come to embody the figure they seek to represent, and in their finer details have managed to impress and amaze even the most hardcore fans.
10. Khal Drogo
By far one of the most popular characters in the series despite his untimely death, Khal Drogo personifies strength and an absolute sense of authority. This fan no doubt has watched the first season more than a few times as his attention to detail is so spot on that he could have possibly stood in as the stuntman for Jason Momoa without anyone being the wiser. From his facial scar to his vibrant shoulder markings this individual absolutely personifies the image of the powerful Khal. Even the customary scowl worn by the character while still in his prime is fierce enough to make one think twice about crossing this individual.
9. Daenerys Targaryen
The Mother of Dragons is without a doubt one of the absolute favorite of many individuals who watch the show, but her popularity took time to develop. After she established herself as the major character that readers knew her to be however the fan base almost literally exploded as women, and yes, even some men, took to wearing the blonde wigs and toting around dragon eggs and miniature winged reptiles. This stunning beauty however has managed to capture both the innocent look and the fierce appearance of the dreaded Breaker of Chains, her innocent gaze hiding a heavy measure of steel behind the lavender hue.
8. Jaime and Cersei Lannister
It doesn’t matter if you despise them or admire them, the Lannister’s are by far amongst the most powerful of all families in the entire “Game of Thrones” world, and it shows from their haughty and often arrogant manner. This couple has encapsulated both Jaime and Cersei with not only the expertise put into their costumes, but also with the smugness and slightly disturbing closeness the pair seem to share onscreen. Though it is an act that many seem willing to forgive considering the time period of the show, it is outright creepy and is depicted in an expert fashion by these two enthusiasts.
7. Tyrion Lannister
Yet another character who has fans and detractors alike, Tyrion has made quite a transition from his days spent as “the imp” to the advisor to the Mother of Dragons where he now sits. This character is understandably hard to be truly faithful to as the stature of the actor, the wonderfully talented Peter Dinklage, is hard to emulate. Yet for all that, there are those who are still able and can pull off Tyrion’s image with his haughty manner and continual desire for drink in a fashion that brings the character to life in a way that is hard to argue with.
6. Brienne of Tarth
If ever there was a loyal soldier within the entire realm of Westeros, Brienne of Tarth would easily claim that role. Bound by honor to any she serves, she willingly puts herself through virtually anything to insure she keeps her word. While the mannish look is quite difficult to pull off considering the level of Hollywood magic, the armor of this fan is so spot on that she could easily pass for the Lady of Tarth should she step onto the set. The stoic, almost wistful look she affects is also a trademark of the character and is equally impressive.
5. Melisandre
Once reviled, then considered to be misunderstood, and even pitied at times, the Red Lady has indeed carved her way into the series as well as the favor of many fans. There is undoubtedly a large margin of error when attempting to emulate this character, as a simple red wig can be the difference between a sublime and simply sappy rendition of this controversial character. As this fan seems to understand however, dedication to the character includes the pale, nearly flawless skin and, of course, the presence of crimson within her own naturally grown locks. Everything, from the jeweled choker to the very look of this young woman, simply cries out danger, as the Lady in Red has come to personify.
4. The Hound (Gregor Clegane)
Rough, gruff, and certainly not the type of man you’d want to meet in daylight let alone in a dark alley. The Hound is a nightmarish figure not only because half of his face was melted off when he was child, but also because he simply doesn’t care who is in his way when it comes to his objectives. In fact, among the entire series the only one he has shown any level of affection for is Arrya Stark, and she would have gladly left him for the buzzards. This fan has gone so far as to show his true dedication by channeling not only the look of the hound, but the tortured mien that the character is so well known for in the series.
3. Jorah Mormont
The role of a hopeless romantic seems to ever be filled by the character of Jorah Mormont, who, like so many others cannot help but gravitate towards his Khaleesi, the Mother of Dragons and the object of his true affection. Unfortunately for Jorah, Daenerys is continually engaged to others who do not always share his complete devotion but have the advantage of gaining her undivided attention. This fan has encapsulated the simple yet steadfast character of Jorah Mormont quite nicely as his costume as well as his stance suggest that he is capable of withstanding the long, lonely drought of emotion brought on by a young and ambitious queen.
2. Arya Stark
Feisty, scrappy, and stubborn to fault are all perfect ways to describe the youngest Stark daughter. Armed with her trusty sword, Needle, she has made a rather interesting trip throughout Westeros, sometimes with the notorious Hound and at others in the company of those who would just as soon cut her down as look at her. This fan has captured the very essence of Arya from her simple garb to the defiant look that has come to define the character so well. While the actress, Maisie Williams, has set a rather high bar for fans to match, many are more than willing to do their best.
1. Jon Snow
Some might call him tortured, others perhaps just distant, but there is no mistaking that the character of Jon Snow, a fan favorite as of the later seasons of “Game of Thrones” is now a powerful and well-loved mainstay of the show. Despite his constant reluctance to play the dreaded game of thrones, he is a rock to those who look to him for guidance and stability, and a fierce enemy to those who might otherwise incur his wrath. The fan in this picture has opted for the look that Jon Snow affected during his time as Commander of the Night’s Watch, a Crow in other words, and has even achieved the continually troubled look that Kit Harrington mastered early on in his time as the troubled figure.
Conclusion
There are many characters that are just as beloved by fans that did not make this list. “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin has created an entire world of memorable and lasting characters that people seek to emulate and portray, and are continually featured at events such as comic-con and other popular conventions. No matter their dedication to the series, each fan that engages in cosplay has shown an amazing amount of detail as well as imagination when it comes to crafting their “Game of Thrones” costumes.
