Polaris: Player Select (also referred to as D|XP) premiered on Disney XD on July 15, 2017. The program will showcase games, events, publishers, and prominent personalities in the gaming world including both sports and role playing games. Other prominent networks have been involved in the production of the program including ESPN, Maker Creators, Attack Media, IGN, Warner Bros, and Banger Films among Others. Polaris: Player Select will feature original programming content produced by DDN (Disney Digital Network) through its gaming subsection of Digomind Productions and Polaris.
It is the first gaming program on the network and will showcase extensive storytelling across the entire video game landscape. Here are some of our impressions of the premiere of the show:
The surprising aspect
The premier of Polaris: Player Select on Disney XD is truly surprising. Disney XD channel is known for its kids’ programs that aim at children aged between 6 and 12. Over many years, the channel has been dedicating itself to airing first-run television series both formerly released and currently running. But Polaris: Player Select (popularly known as D|XP among its avid followers) is unique compared to other shows that air on the channel. It is a daily programming block that is fully dedicated to gamers. This was surprising to millions of parents who throng the show to watch Mook or The Pirate. But the small break of the culture at Disney leading to the beginning of airing gaming shows makes some sense. In this age of video games, a lot of 13+ year pre-adolescents already know how to play video games.
Favorite aspect
The show is tailor made and interactive. These two qualities make it the best gaming show for the pre-teens. For instance, a variety of renown gaming personalities hosts it for a period of one hour which is just sufficient. Some of the top gamers to host it include Joey Graceffa, Jimmy Wong, and Strawburry17 among others. Better yet, some short skits of comedic game plays are incorporated to make the gaming experience livelier. The synching of perfected and planned content makes Polaris: Player Select a favorite show for a lot of kids and is highly recommendable.
The obvious
It took no one by surprise when it turned out that Disney XD had to collaborate with many other creative partners in the gaming world to deliver the authentic programming and enable access to game related events. Generally, Disney is still new in this entertainment niche. Production of Polaris: Player Select was too sophisticated for the entertainment giant. The first glance at the program can also reveal to you that it lacks the touch and feel that is often experienced with Disney produced programs.
The setback
The main disappointment about Polaris: Player Select is the time it airs. The block of programming is set at 9 pm to 3 am every day. We all know this is not really a great time to have young gamers in front of the screen. Another main setback has something to do with how the program is marketed. In a lot of avenues, it is being referred to as a reality series when actually it is a gaming live action program.
