When this YouTuber decides to try and crush human hair with a hydraulic press, all in an effort to compress it into stone, the result is something you probably didn’t expect. If you’ve read up on your biology then you would know that hair is made up of a very tough protein called keratin, and is very hard to break or alter in any other way that doesn’t involve a sharp object. What that means is that when hair meets a hydraulic press there’s not going to be a very high probability that it’s going to compress so tightly that it’s going to turn to stone. Hair is a lot tougher than people tend to think, especially if it’s cared for and washed on a regular basis. While it’s possible to tear someone’s hair out, simply ripping the strands of hair in two is just about impossible unless someone’s hair is that brittle.
So really it wasn’t much of a surprise when the hydraulic press was unable to compact the wad of hair into anything resembling a rock. But it was surprising to see the powdery substance that emerged from the tool, only to realize it was hair that had been absolutely pulverized. The amount of pressure coming down on that press is simply immense, enough that it would pulp just about anything that was put in front of it, including hair obviously. So then what does the guy operating the press do? Of course he goes and has more fun. Some people might say it’s a guy thing and in some cases they’d be right, but there are plenty of women that would love to simply crush something like this for the fun of it, just to see what might happen. To see hair turned to powdery pulp isn’t something you’ll see every day, but to consider how much force is coming down on that press is even more eye-popping.
It’s even more so when you see what happens to the roll of paper that gets put into the press. There’s little no human in this world that could stomp on that roll and flatten it the way this press did. By the time the guy let up on the press the roll was about as flat as a pancake, literally. In fact when the guy took it off to examine it one might almost think they could use the resulting disc as a dinner plate if they so chose. Compacting certain materials leads to results that tend to be amazing at times, but some things are simply unable to be compacted tightly enough to create the kind of surface this guy was going for. You might have to know a little bit about geology to understand the interplay of time and pressure to fully grasp the idea of how things become compacted in certain ways, but while hair is inordinately tough it’s also far looser in composition than many other things that could be compacted with greater ease.
