When you think of Star Wars you think of the Force, the Jedi, and more likely than not, you think of the name Skywalker. Some people might think of other iconic characters, but ever since the first movie came out in the 70s the legend of Luke Skywalker and the eventual confrontation with the dreaded Darth Vader has been something that has withstood the test of time in a way that many feuds don’t come close to. As is shown by Ricky Miller of Screenrant and the short video above, the legacy of the Skywalker name isn’t nearly as old as the Jedi, but the prophecy that foretold of Skywalker, if you believe it, has been around for some time. What’s so important at this moment however is that Disney has made it loud and clear that once this next movie comes out, the Skywalker story will be told in full. It will end, in one way or another, and already you can almost hear the emptiness that some might feel will be left as a result.
In truth the Star Wars universe is a great deal larger than just the Skywalkers, but at the same time they’ve been such an integral part of the main story that it’s difficult to think of them not being involved any longer with the overall tale. If you needed any more confirmation about this however you might want to read L.D. Nolan’s article in CBR concerning what Daisy Ridley had to say about her character. She was apparently misquoted as saying that she will not be a part of Star Wars moving forward, but instead she meant to say that she has no idea if her character will be a part of any future installments. Keep in mind that there are already plans that are being put on hold for another trilogy as the idea seems to be to let thing settle for a bit. After the continued backlash from The Last Jedi, Disney obviously wanted to take stock of what they would do in the years to come.
It seems too difficult to think that there might come a day when there will be no more Skywalker’s in the Star Wars universe, but then again there weren’t any Skywalker’s before Anakin came along, and if the people at Disney wanted to start up a new round of trilogies stemming from the creation of the Jedi or from the Old Republic, perhaps from the days of Revan, or Darth Bane, or any time back in the past, fans would be receptive. It would need a lot of back story and a great deal of hype, and then it would have to live up to that hype since quite honestly a lot of fans are still going to be smarting from the loss of such icons as the Solo’s and the Skywalker’s, as they already are at this moment. The landscape has changed without a doubt, and the future of the Star Wars franchise no longer belongs to just the Skywalker’s, since the canon has been so radically changed (thanks Disney). If it was any other way the Skywalker’s would have continued with Ben Skywalker, then Cade Skywalker, who was featured in the comics at one point and eventually took on Darth Krayt, a former Jedi from the Clone War era that had been found by Master Ki-Adi-Mundi. If all these names are starting to confuse you it might be time to brush up on the overwhelming amount of Star Wars lore that’s out there for people to learn. There is a LOT more to Star Wars than the Skywalker’s, but they’ve been among the most interesting since they were truly the first that were introduced to us all in a big way.
So yes, the Skywalker line will end, and the universe will go on, and hopefully those that take the helm for future movies will perhaps think upon the old, or Legends, canon and realize that there is a great wealth of material to pull from, and a very different way to spin the story without the Skywalker’s being present. After all, the Force is always there, and it’s always willing to find those that are able and willing to use it. The possibilities aren’t endless, but they’re plentiful enough that they shouldn’t run out within the next few generations provided that someone is willing to take up the reins and continue to write one script after another while making them engaging as they go. Would that some of us in the writing community be deemed worthy enough to create a Star Wars story, there’s no doubt that some of us would be found worthy successors. As this short video shows us though, the dark and light sides of the Force will always oppose one another, and there will always be someone willing to take up the fight. Eventually though, the Skywalkers’ time is set to expire.
