Ever hear of an act so bad it’s good? That kind of describes the skit that Peter Dinklage and Gwen Stefani did on SNL years ago titled Space Pants. It’s the kind of song that gets in your head and nestles there until you forget about it only to pop up later when you least expect it. That’s the kind of performance you don’t forget all at once since it has that way of creeping back into your consciousness and taking root. If some of you were cringing when you heard it don’t feel bad since quite honestly it is a little odd but it’s hardly the worst thing you’ll ever hear.
Peter Dinklage is without a doubt a great actor that takes on some seriously odd roles at times simply because, well, he’s Peter Dinklage. He’s one of the best actors out there right now and honestly he’s been around for a while so it’s kind of odd that people didn’t notice him any sooner. To be honest though once he started taking on roles like Tyrion Lannister and showing up in movies like Elf he did manage to gain a greater amount of attention simply because of his height and the way that it never seems to hamper him in terms of his acting. Recently in fact he got to play a character that by definition would have had him using his normal size but thanks to the use of special effects saw him as a rather contradictory character that was labeled a dwarf even though he was the size of a giant. In Avengers: Infinity War he played the part of Eitri, one of the dwarfs that manned the forges responsible for making Thor’s hammer and the infinity gauntlet. Dejected thanks to the treachery of Thanos after receiving the gauntlet, Eitri was the last dwarf left in the forge and had been cursed with metal hands that he could not manipulate, which to a metal-worker and weaponsmith would be tantamount to a death sentence.
Dinklage has really done a lot when you think about it and space pants is perhaps one of the more obscure and silly skits he’s ever done and yet it’s stood the test of time for being just another piece on SNL. The fact that they got Gwen Stefani to come in and work it with him was pretty cool since on his own he was doing pretty much okay as an obnoxious lounge singer that was crowing about his pants and how great they were. Getting that song out of your head though is going to be difficult since it really digs in there and tarts to make you sing every now and then out of habit. Part of it could be that Dinklage is so forceful on his delivery and so deadpan that you can’t help but laugh and possibly wonder how he got through all of it without laughing.
It’s been obvious that Peter has a good time while on set, but it’s just as obvious that he’s that professional to get through a take without breaking down into giggles.
