Will We Ever See Kappa Mikey Back on the Air?

Kappa Mikey is kind of a strange show that was a parody/homage to anime in that it featured anime qualities and themes but was something else entirely. The whole story centers around Mikey obviously, who is an American kid that somehow lucks out and gains a spot on a Japanese TV show and is accepted by some but resented by others. The show is something that might seem a bit awkward and off kilter to some folks since the animation differences within the show, just look at the picture and the clip below, are so confusing that trying to make sense of them might cause an instant headache. In a sense it’s almost as though some of the characters are out of focus while others were drawn by a magic marker. But the show did generate some buzz as it was something different and new. If there’s a possibility it could come back it would be largely because anime is still a very popular medium right now in animation and it would be a way to highlight just what the show was really all about.

But there’d have to be a pretty big demand for it, as this sounds like a rather complicated undertaking.

There were different animation groups for the different styles.

Just taking a look at the artwork and how the characters are represented gives you a good understanding that this show is not like a lot of others since it’s almost like three or four shows mashed into one in terms of animation. How it all works to become a cohesive show is kind of hard to imagine but it did so in a way that allowed people to enjoy it and even get something out of it other than pure entertainment. But the cost of it in terms of labor and work hours seems like it would drive the budget through the roof when everything was finally tallied up. Of course there could be ways around this and there might be a possibility that the show could find artists that are talented in more than just one style and could diversify. A lot of things are possible when it comes to animation.

Similar voices would be essential

For all those fans that are either purists or simply like to keep some form of continuity with their shows this would be a must since switching voices midstream, or even after so many years, is not all that appreciated. The only upside to this is that if the voices were switched out they could possibly try to pick up actors that are well known and have been in the business for much longer. This could up the value of the show and manage to bring in new viewers as well as placate old viewers. At this point though it seems safe to say that there’s not a whole lot of people that would be put out by changing the lineup, simply because Kappa Mikey has been off the air for the last decade now. If there’s anyone that remembers it and remembers the voices of the characters that well then it’s safe to say that they might be more relieved to see it’s back and not worry so much about what each character sounds like so long as it’s a close match.

More than likely toned down

As it stands now Kappa Mikey did deal with some adult content and wasn’t exactly something you’d want your kids to watch without some sort of supervision. A lot of cartoons could be described in the same manner these days but this is one that really feels like it would belong more on Adult Swim than anything. Toning it down doesn’t seem like it would be the best idea in the world largely because any fans that do still remember the show would want to see the same quality and would be hoping to see something along the same lines as was given in the two seasons that aired. If the show does come back it would need to update itself just a little perhaps, but still remain as true to its original form as possible.

Right now just hearing the name of the show seems to indicate that someone somewhere is thinking about it and that it might be something that people are trying to get back on the air in order to expose a new generation to something they believe is worthwhile. If it does happen then it could be interesting, but there’s a great deal of competition to work past, so it’d have to be something flat out amazing to even get noticed.
