Why Jeffrey Wright Would Make an Awesome Commissioner Gordon

Ryan Scott of MovieWeb is one of the many that think that Jeffrey Wright might actually make a pretty good Commissioner Gordon, maybe even an awesome one since it seems that he’s already established himself throughout the years and could be the kind of personality that might be able to step in and make the role pop just a bit more. There are those that might point out that Wright is a black man and might have a slight issue largely because Gordon has always been depicted as a white man, meaning the source material is once again not being followed. Honestly that’s not a huge issue that can’t be placed to the side in order to put someone that can bring another level of expertise to the role, as Jeffrey would undoubtedly do. Given his acting credits and how many different places he’s been seen it could be that his time in The Batman would be well spent since quite honestly he does have the kind of demeanor that’s rather calm, quiet, and doesn’t get too crazy unless there’s an absolute need.

J.K. Simmons took on the role of Gordon in the Justice League movie and it’s kind of thankful that he won’t be coming back most likely since Simmons is another great actor but he doesn’t seem to really exemplify Gordon in a big way, at least not as much as has been shown in previous movies by the likes of Gary Oldman and Pat Hingle. Wright could possibly bring another level to this character that makes him seem just a little different than others while at the same time sticking to the character as he’s been depicted and keeping some continuity with the Batman story. It might seem funny to say that there’s any continuity between the movies since really there isn’t, but with the idea of there being a hero, his allies, and his villains, the continuity hasn’t been messed with that much since obviously that particular formula is being followed from one version to another. Commissioner Gordon has been seen as an ally of Batman, a friend to Bruce Wayne, and in effect the more mundane crime fighter within the Batman story, kind of like the step down from the dark knight in terms of those that are trying to make a difference.

In a way he’s one of Batman’s only real lifelines to a normal life since Gordon works with the Batman as much as he can while trying to to be as indebted to a vigilante that is basically doing his job outside the boundaries of the law. It’s kind of a weird symbiosis that goes on between Batman and the police in Gotham since he doesn’t work for them, he tends to do their job at times, and yet he isn’t beholden to them in any way, nor is he ever held accountable for the things he does. This makes his relationship with the Commissioner a bit troublesome at times since it seems that Gordon should have cut the connection to Batman a long time ago, and yet he likely won’t ever do this in the comics or the movies entirely since there’s just too much of a history there and too much good to be done between the two of them.

As Tonja Renee Stidhum from The Root might agree, Wright has managed to create a fan base throughout the years in a few different ways and has been seen to get better and better with each performance. His time on Westworld has really sparked a lot of interest in people since his time as Bernard has really reached a lot of people on a few different levels. There’s a great deal he can offer to the role of Jim Gordon and it would be great if he became the next person to take up the role. There’s nothing set in stone as of yet though it does seem as though this role might become his since he’s the top name that’s being looked at right now. If there’s anyone else out there that’s being looked over for this role it has yet to be revealed, but as a lot of people might already know, Jonah Hill is being looked at for the part of a villain, no one knows who yet, but he also seems to be holding out for a larger salary. In truth it almost seems as though Wright might be better for this movie simply because while he is known he’s not a personality on the same level as Hill that could possibly overtake Pattinson, who is meant to be the star. While Hill might be a great actor that’s done plenty of things in his career to be worth a great deal of money, Wright is someone that might seek to bolster Pattinson rather than overtake his performance.
