Why Into the Badlands’ Cressida is One of the Coolest Characters on TV

If you started watching Into the Badlands from season one and haven’t stopped then you already know who Cressida is and don’t need the introduction, but for those of you that are just getting into it and need to know who she is, just know that she’s a great deal like a prophet and a right-hand to one of the baddest people in the entire story. Also, she has her own gifts that make her seem a little overpowered and able to take on some of the most skilled people in the story. It might be a spoiler if you haven’t seen it, but if you considered Lydia to be one of the toughest people around you might need to reassess that claim since she went down pretty easily when she tried to kill Cressida.

Like the others that are able to utilize the Gift that makes them scary strong, fast, and durable, Cressida has something that puts her on their level, and possibly beyond, though we have yet to see proof of that yet. But as Nicholas Raymond of ScreenRant has indicated when she uses the Gift, her eyes turn a shade of crimson that’s kind of scary to look at since it gives her a much more menacing look. Anyone remember back to the first season when we thought that M.K. was the only one to have the Gift at first? It was creepy to look at back then when his eyes turned black and he suddenly was able to take on Sunny without much effort. But now that there are others that have the Gift it’s even crazier since instead of just one super-powered individual there are many, and Pilgrim is unfortunately a fit leader but not always a wise one. That is why he has Cressida after all but even she seems like can become a bit unhinged if you step back and give her a chance.

That could be why she’s so inherently awesome though, since she is a multi-layered individual. She doesn’t seem as though she wants to kill, but she won’t hesitate to defend herself when the time comes and she certainly won’t hold back when it’s time to shed a little blood. Her strength and her speed are tremendous when boosted by the Gift, but the reason her eyes turn red is something that might be interesting to find out since it would seem to indicate that maybe she has more control over the Gift or that she has some ability that the others don’t have. It’s hard to say but the poise and assurance of this character make her into someone that’s hard to gauge and easy to be awed by throughout the course of her character arc so far. Characters such as Cressida usually warrant a closer look once it’s been established that they do in fact have a place in the story and that it’s more as just a guest role.

Perhaps one of the best things about Cressida is that no one knows everything about her at the moment. The level of mystique she still has is great since it leaves people guessing and wanting to learn more which means they’ll be watching more and trying to unveil her character just a bit as the story goes along. That and the theories and rumors that come about as the show continues to unveil one piece at a time is great since it means that people are interested and are seriously trying to figure out just which way to look at this point. There’s nothing more flattering to the writers, the director, and even the actors and crew of a show than to know that their efforts aren’t going unappreciated, and when characters like Cressida are able to lend a bit of help to the story by creating a significant arc through their words and actions it becomes even better since they become one of the many focal points that continue to drive the show to new heights and keep it interesting.

Plus if you’re thinking that Cressida looks familiar from somewhere you might have watched Lorraine Toussaint in something else as well since the actress has been quite busy throughout her career. Personally the character of Vee from Orange Is The New Black seems to be as close to Cressida as it can be since if you imagine Vee with the kind of power that Cressida has it’s kind of easy to see just how vicious she might be able to get. Imagine Cressida with a mean streak and you can imagine that she’d be a lot worse than she already is. Lorraine does manage to play characters that are tougher than hell, even if it’s not readily obvious that Cressida is a capable fighter at all times. As you can see though, she’s got a few tricks up her sleeves.
