If you really think that anyone’s going to be spilling the beans on who the Night King wants to kill then apologies right away since not even the actor playing him, Vladimir Furdik, is able to give us that. But at the same time you can easily guess from season 6 that he has a serious ax to grind against the Children of the Forest since they were the ones that created him in the first place. So thinking that one of their descendants might actually be who he’s targeting could be a good guess, but it could also lead to a large number of possibilities. There are of course some that might seem to stand a chance of incurring his wrath more than others since throughout the series it’s been seen that he’s had something of a grudge with a few characters. But whoever is firmly in his sights is going to be in for one massive battle since among the White Walkers he’s the first and undoubtedly the most powerful.
It doesn’t seem likely to be Daenerys Targaryen since it would seem that she’s more of a means to an end at this point, an enemy he’ll have to face all the same but not someone he seems particularly concerned about. After all he now has a dragon of his own, one of her ‘children’ and under his guidance the dragon seems more powerful than ever before. Even with two other dragons to contend with it would seem that he’s going to have his sights set on whoever his real target is. Daenerys will no doubt give him something to deal with and there’s bound to be an impressive dragon battle coming, but if there’s any indication of how vicious the Night King is going to be, just ask those stuck on the Wall during last season’s finale.
Jon Snow could be a possible target since he and the Night King have come across one another’s path before when Jon had to flee following a massive wight attack that nearly wiped out the Wildling forces. The Night King raised his arms at that point when he saw Jon and it was evident that he acknowledged Snow as an enemy instead of just a mere nuisance. After all, Jon’s weapon did take down a White Walker and this is something that would make the rest of them stand up and pay attention. It remains to be seen what kind of skill the Night King really has since his back story reveals him as a First Man and not much else. The Children of the Forest created him and thereby brought a plague upon the world, but at the same time they didn’t seem to understand that he would eventually break free of their masters and strike out on their own.
The connection the Night King has to Westeros isn’t a cut and dried as many people would like, but it’s too obvious that he’s coming home and he’s bringing a few friends with him, as well as making a few new friends along the way as his army continues to grow with those that are killed by his wights. One nagging though hits home in all this though, how horrifying would it be if Hodor, brave Hodor that saved Bran in the end, were to be brought back as a wight? The emotional impact of those that are bound to fight to protect Winterfell seeing those that they once knew as friends and companions might be an interesting twist, but it would seem that this coming battle is more about survival than sentiment.
But here’s another twist for you. What if it’s Bran that he’s coming for? There’s no way to know who could possibly be related to the man that became the Night King, unless George R.R. Martin has finally finished another book and is closing in on being done with the Game of Thrones series (not likely unfortunately), but it would seem that the Night King has some special enmity for Bran since the young Stark is able to view him from afar and has been made privy to his transformation. If you’ll recall, the Children of the Forest created the Night King and the White Walkers to defend themselves from humanity, who were continually encroaching on their territory and cutting down their trees to make way for their civilization. So in essence, the Night King was meant to be a guard dog of sorts, as were all the White Walkers, but instead they created a creature that would eventually seek their destruction, along with that of humanity.
Honestly this next season is going to be epic since the opposing forces that are coming together are going to be laying waste to one another from the start. But one has to wonder, where are the Children of the Forest going to stand when the conflict escalates?
