When Hans Zimmer made the announcement that he was retiring from scoring superhero films, it was because of a personal conflict. Zimmer is an Oscar winner for his composing and a man who deeply feels what he is writing and develops a fierce loyalty, not only to the piece, but to the films for which he has written. It was too much for him to reconcile when Christian Bale suddenly becomes Ben Affleck in the portrayal of the Batman character. It created such a conflict that Zimmer felt it was the right time to end this phase in his career. He so deeply connected with Bale’s rendition of the character that the music flowed so naturally. He’s not ruling out a return, but the script will need to touch him in the same way that he was inspired to compose for the previous film.
Loss of inspiration evident in comparison
Fans were disappointed with the score of the Nov 17 release and considered it to be a bland opening in comparison to the creative genius of Hans Zimmer. Junkie XL admitted that working without Zimmer wasn’t the same and it was a huge undertaking in his absence. It didn’t help to have Danny Elfman come in to “fine tune” the final score of the film. Elfman has achieved excellence in his own right and no aspersions are cast his direction, it is the purity that perhaps only Zimmer can deliver that is missing. This is a bit problematic for some of the die-hard fans that aren’t fond of the changes. What did one fan do in finding a solution to the problem?
Fan Made video brings Zimmer back in spirit
The Fan made video that inserted Zimmer and Junkie XLs Score into the opening of the new release just to illustrate the difference between the team’s inspired scores and Elfman’s darker approach. It’s apples and oranges. Although there are some impressive action shots and the cinematography is over the top, there is something lacking in the score and there’s no way to deny it. Perhaps if we’d never been exposed to Zimmer’s depth of perception in his composition, it wouldn’t have been such a big deal. The video stands as proof that at least one fan, joined by the others who lodged their complaints about the lackluster musical score consider it to be a very big deal.
New script’s impact on the film
If you ask Hans Zimmer, the change in the direction of Batman is something that dried up his creative juices through the lack of connection with Affleck’s take on the superhero. Loyalty to Bale’s representation was the key for Zimmer, but is this the sentiment of the viewers as well? The fan who made the video took his feeling so far as to provide tangible evidence of the differences. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then what can you say about a video that has inserted changes in the score? It speaks volumes without the utterance of a single word.
