For those of you who weren’t aware, the show Cosplay Melee debuted on Syfy tonight. I did not watch it but I did notify you guys about a month ago that the show would be premiering. My honest opinion is that this show might be just a little too soon. Cosplay is huge. Don’t get me wrong. I’m one of the first people that started posting cosplay pictures all the way back in 2007. While it was around before then, it didn’t really hit its stride until at least 2012.
Since that time the costume quality continues to rise and more and more people are actually making a living at it. The one thing you can’t gauge though is that despite Cosplay’s popularity, will a show that pits people in a cosplay contest with each other going to play well? Honestly I’m on the fence about it hence why I didn’t watch it. So I’m looking for opinions.
This is my hope for the show. I hope it picks up a nice pocket of viewers so that it’s at least profitable and stays on the air. However, I think the idea of this being somewhat of a fashion idea is probably a mistake. I think if you made it into something that Adam Savage would host you’d be getting somewhere.
Anyway, did anyone catch the show?
