It’s funny to realize that Alicia Vikander, you know the woman that’s going revolutionize Tomb Raider for the modern era, was once a cute 8-year old that won a Swedish talent show. The name of the show she was on is kind of hard to pronounce in English but just putting it to rest it was a lip sync battle that she had to compete in and she ended up winning first prize. Apparently she showed the most emotion and simply nailed the song she was mouthing so it the award and the acclaim went to her. Not too surprisingly she admitted that her mom still had the award and had found a practical use for it, holding keys.
As of now Vikander’s stock is rising way, way up since Tomb Raider has been one of the most anticipated movies for awhile now and is no doubt going to keep drawing in the fans as soon as it’s out in theaters, which is tomorrow coincidentally. People have been awaiting another Tomb Raider movie ever since Angelina Jolie hung up the guns and called it quits, and it’s been a big debate on just where Lara Croft would be taken and how her story would continue. Showing an origin story seemed to be the only real way that things could be done at this point since the Jolie stories kind of went nowhere very quickly after the first one was out. Getting the kind of woman that can play Lara is not the biggest issue, though it’s substantial enough that many names were likely considered before Vikander was given the role.
Coming up with enough stories that people might recognize and embrace however would be the real struggle. The two movies that have come before were not the worst sins ever committed by anything attached to the franchise but they were severely lacking in the kind of action that people really wanted to see. Some fans would stand by the films and claim that they’d done a fair job of representing the famed explorer, but others washed their hands of the Jolie experience when it came to Tomb Raider after the dismal outing of the second movie. This time around however it seems that Lara will not already be the highly trained and awesome explorer that people came to know her as, but an untested rookie that still has to earn her stripes so to speak. She’ll have been trained how to handle herself and no doubt be tough enough to endure the challenges ahead, but her experience in the field seems as though it will be short compared to the first two movies.
Added to that is the fact that Vikander, while already a celebrity, is not as well known as Jolie was when she came to the big screen donning the twin pistols of the main character and the cocksure attitude that has been such a well-recorded characteristic. In short, she’s the kind of Lara Croft that people can enjoy since she’s not the kind of character that seems to know something about everything already.
