The Most Overpaid Actors on Television

2010 Summer TCA Tour - Day 1

While we are lucky enough to be in a truly golden age of television right now, with so many phenomenal series and performances gracing our screens every week, not every show or actor receives the respect or, in some cases, the payment that he or she deserves. Incredibly strong performers on underrated programs, such Jensen Ackles on The CW’s Supernatural or Jake Johnson on Fox’s New Girl, do not earn anywhere close to the money that stars on series like Two and a Half Man and NCIS do. This disparity between what certain actors deserve to be paid and what they actually end up earning made me wonder, who are the most overpaid TV performers out there right now? And after researching and thinking long and hard, I came up with this list for the most overpaid actors on television.

TechCrunch Disrupt New York May 2011 - Day 2Ashton Kutcher

Making $750,000 per episode for Two and a Half Men, Kutcher is the highest paid actor on this list, and he’s also one of the most overrated. Despite the fact that Men‘s poor writing does him no favors, Kutcher completely phones in his performance as Walden Schmidt, and I’ve never seen any “acting” in his career that I would consider worthy of that kind of money.

2012 Winter TCA Tour - Day 8Mark Harmon

Mark Harmon is a fine actor, and NCIS is a fine show. But does “fine” really mean that your acting is worthy of over $500,000 per episode? No, but being one of the most watched shows on TV gets you that kind of money. Actors like Matthew Rhys, Timothy Olyphant, and Damian Lewis are playing much more interesting and challenging characters on TV right now, but not making anywhere near the money that Harmon does. While I understand the commercial reasons behind it, it still doesn’t feel right.

The 40th Annual People's Choice Awards - Red CarpetMichael Weatherly

Not to gang up on NCIS, but along with Harmon, Michael Weatherly also earns quite a lot of money for his acting on the CBS series with a pretty staggering $250,000 per episode. To put this into perspective, that’s $100,000 more than Peter Dinklage receives for each episode of Game of Thrones and $200,000 more than Tatiana Maslany gets for playing several different roles on Orphan Black.

2010 Summer TCA Tour - Day 1The Cast of The Big Bang Theory

Controversial confession time: I think that The Big Bang Theory is the most overrated show on TV and one of the worst sitcoms to hit the airwaves in years. It’s simplistic, cheap, lazy, worst of all, just not funny. For some reason though, it’s America’s favorite comedy, raking in higher viewership than American Idol (even challenging The Walking Dead‘s demo numbers), which thus allows for the show’s main three actors (Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, and Johnny Galecki) to ask for pay raises to $1,000,000 per episode. That’s the kind of money that any and all members  of the cast of Community deserve to receive, but alas, we live in a world where the overrated are overpaid.

Midnight Mission Golden Heart Awards 2013Tim Allen

Being the voice of Buzz Lightyear and one of the stars of one of the best classic sitcoms to ever hit TV (I miss you, Home Improvement) can only get you so far, and in my opinion, it’s not enough for Tim Allen to be making a reported $11 million a year for his gig on Last Man Standing, a  boring, simplistic show that ABC has lumped into its Friday night lineup. Personally, even though Modern Family has lacked a bit of its original luster in recent seasons, I’d rather see performers from that series, like Ty Burrell or Eric Stonestreet, walk away with the kind of money that Allen’s making. I mean, aren’t those four straight Emmys worth anything?

2014 Winter TCA Tour - Day 13Ray Romano

When I call Ray Romano overpaid, it has absolutely nothing to do with his talent or ability as an actor to connect with the audience. No, when I say that Romano is overpaid, I simply mean that it makes no logical sense to me how an actor who does not have a series regular position on a show (no matter how much he guest stars on Parenthood) can be one of 2013’s top earning TV performers. The math does not add up to me, which can mean only one thing: Romano is getting paid quite a large sum for the little bit that he does act.

The Hasty Pudding Theatricals Honor Neil Patrick Harris as 2014 Man of the YearNeil Patrick Harris

I probably haven’t gained any new fans with my complete and total dislike for CBS and its show throughout this article, but for anybody who hasn’t been pushed over the edge yet, my opinion about How I Met Your Mother might just do it. Despite the show being one of the most popular sitcoms on air, and its cast, specifically Neil Patrick Harris, being adored by all, I don’t think either HIMYM or NPH deserve the praise or money that they receive. NPH is most certainly a capable actor and a tremendous talent, someone I’ve thoroughly enjoyed as a host of the Tony Awards, or in his guest performances in shows like Glee or in films like the Harold and Kumar movies. However, when it comes to NPH’s acting on HIMYM, I think, as an actor, he’s too limited by the one-note character of Barney Stinson to really provide anything unique or enlightening to TV audiences. Furthermore, I don’t think the performance is worth the reported $15 million Patrick Harris earned in 2013.

2013 Summer TCA Tour - Day 2Patrick Dempsey

Patrick Dempsey doesn’t make this list because I think he’s a poor actor or a weak link when it comes to the cast of Grey’s Anatomy. No, he’s on here because for the last couple of seasons of Grey‘s, Dempsey hasn’t really been asked to do a lot, and his performance as Derek has been, for the most part, pretty much on cruise control. Although Dempsey has lacked any meaty or fulfilling storylines on Grey‘s recently (keeping in mind that I’ve only seen the first three episodes of season 10 so far), the actor’s still doing fine for himself financially, earning a supposed $13 million during 2013. That’s enough to keep that McDreamy smile on his face for a long while, even if Derek and Meredith have become almost supporting characters on a series that they both used to be the central stars of.

64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Governors BallJon Cryer

Similar to Ashton Kutcher, the amount of money that Cryer makes for the poorly written and acted Two and a Half Men astounds me. In 2013, Cryer walked away with $21 million for his role. The only good thing I can say about this is that at least Jon Cryer seems to be a nice enough guy that he almost deserves this kind of money.

FOX All-Star Party - InsideCharlie Sheen

Despite all the damage and controversy he caused for his fellow actors like Cryer and for Two and a Half Men in general, Charlie Sheen has still found a way to succeed on TV with FX’s Anger Management. In 2013, Sheen reportedly made $10 million, truly making him the most overpaid and most unlikable person to make this list.
