Basketball fans seem a lot more mellow than a lot of other sports. Maybe it’s because they’re not as much of a contact sport as any other but it could also be something else. But just like any fan you don’t talk about their team unless you’re willing to back it up with some facts. Talking about the LA Lakers is safe enough so long as you don’t mention anything that ends or begins with the word controversy, which they’ve unfortunately known something about in their long history. Still, the Lakers are a team that managed to create a dynasty and are still considered heavy contenders in the game of basketball.
But really, don’t talk bad about them unless you’ve got facts to back up the words.
5. Love and Basketball
A lot of basketball films have to do with the love of the game and how hard people are willing to fight to attain their dreams of being in the NBA. Some go as hard as they can until they reach college where they kind of tire out and find that they have other things in life that they want to do. Others try as hard as they can and burnout far too quickly. It’s a rough world to get into unless you happen to love how hard it can get.
4. Rebound
This is just a feelgood movie that anyone should be able to get into since it’s once more about the love of the game and remembering what really matters. From a young age some athletes are taught that if you’re not winning you’re not moving forward. Sometimes it takes a loss to see what you’ve really gained. At that point you understand what it takes to be a champion.
3. Daddy’s Home
So this one was only relevant because it was AT a Lakers game, but it’s pretty funny. Will Ferrell usually isn’t the funniest guy in the world unless he’s got backup and Mark Walhberg fits the bill in this case. Mark’s serious attitude and demeanor kind of balances out the wacky and over the top acting that Ferrell is so well known for. Plus the image of a cheerleader getting tagged is kind of amusing but still kind of disturbing.
2. Above the Rim
You can’t reach for the glory without having to deal with the darker side of things at times and this film tends to show just what it means to really want something but not understand what you’ll have to go through to get it. Sure, it’s a hood film that shows a lot of unrealistic pitfalls and the dark side of basketball, but it’s also a warning that nothing goes untouched by corruption from time to time. Plus it’s a pretty good basketball movie.
1. White Men Can’t Jump
It shouldn’t matter what team you root for this film is one of the absolute best when it comes to basketball. Of course it’s all street ball, there’s nothing wrong with and in some ways it’s very accurate. But the main draw is that Woody and Wesley are both down on their luck and have the skills to turn their lives around, it’s just a matter of doing it at some point.
Lakers fans and basketball fans in general could likely agree that these are some of the best films when it comes to basketball.
