More casting news has been announced regarding the reboot of Cagney & Lacey. Veteran actor Ving Rhames has joined the pilot. He will join Sarah Drew and Michelle Hurd, who will be playing the female cop duo as announced last week. That casting news was revealed just days after ABC announced that Sarah Drew would not be returning to Grey’s Anatomy for the 15th season.
Rhames will be playing Police Captain Stark. His character is describes as a leader who inspires loyalty in those around him. Though Rhames is more famous for his movie roles like Pulp Fiction and the Mission Impossible franchise, he has appeared in a few short lived series including Monday Mornings in 2013 and Gravity in 2010.
The original Cagney & Lacey ran for seven season on CBS from 1982 to 1988. The series starred Tyne Daley as Mary Beth Lacey and Sharon Gless as Christine Ganey for seasons 2 through 7. The character was played by Meg Foster for the six-episode first season. Both Daley and Gless took home an Emmy win for their work on the series.
Cagney & Lacey is the second reboot that CBS has announced for the potential 2018-2019 television season. Last month, the network declared that they would be bringing back Murphy Brown with a 13-episode order. Most of the cast is slated to make a return with Candice Bergen including Faith Ford and Grant Shaud.
If Cagney & Lacey gets picked up to series, it would be great to see Daly and Gless guest star. Both actresses have stayed busy over the last few decades. Daly appeared on the series Judging Amy and guest-starred on Drew’s series Grey’s Anatomy as Derek’s mother. Gless starred in the series Queer as Folk, Burn Notice, and most recently guest starred on the first season of The Exorcist.
