Ice T, born Tracey Lauren Marrow, has been one of the most popular rap artists of all time both during and after his move to Hollywood. He was one of the guys that put gangster rap on the map and was never shy about it even when he started making movies. For a long time he’s been pushing that his music was meant to have a deeper message and while it’s hard to find at times, especially in his earlier stuff, his movie roles have almost always carried a much stronger message than people would think. A lot of times he’s been a bit player, but he’s also been a leading man before and he’s done pretty well.
As of now he’s still playing the role of Finn on Law and Order: SVU, and is still awesome.
5. Johnny Mnemonic-J-Bone
Johnny Mnemonic is a messed up movie about a courier that is carrying a vast load of information in his head that in the hands of the wrong people could continue doing the same thing it’s been doing, subjugating others and raising the elite above the masses. In the hands of someone like J-Bone though it could set people free and give them a chance to lead a normal life.
4. 3000 Miles to Graceland-Hamilton
Hamilton doesn’t come in until a lot later in the movie but when he does he’s the cold-blooded killer that’s perfect with Costner’s character. He’s just out to get paid and cause mayhem. But he still won’t turn down a jelly sandwich when it’s offered. Watch the movie and you’ll get that reference. It’s actually kind of funny.
3. Trespass-King James
King James serves as the leader of his gang but Ice Cube’s character is the one loose cannon that he can’t control. Throughout the movie there’s a power struggle between the two of them that continually undermines King James’ efforts to get his brother back safely from the two men that are holding him. Of course the only reason they’re holding him is so that King James and his men don’t outright kill them for having witnessed them murder someone.
2. Surviving the Game-Jack Mason
Homeless and hopeless after his dog and then his best friend die, Mason is about ready to end it when he’s saved by a man that offers him a chance at a new life. The only trouble is that new life is bound to get him killed as he’s taken to a remote forest and given the chance to live if he reaches civilization, or die if he can’t outrun the pack of hunters that have been gathered to chase him down.
1. New Jack City-Scotty
As he moved into movies and away from his rap career Ice T became more of a positive figure in many ways. As a cop he wants to clean up the streets but he knows that the harder he tries the more drug dealers keep popping up. That doesn’t stop him however as he decides to go after one of the biggest and the baddest with everything he has. At one point he has his finger on the trigger and only his sense of justice to keep him from pulling it on the main bad guy when he finally corners him.
He’s just gotten better with age each time he shows up on film or TV.
