There were some true flops in 2017 when it came to the movies. Either they weren’t good ideas to begin with or they were executed so poorly that there was just no easy way to fix them to make sure that audiences would think differently than the critics. Some movies suffered from horrible dialogue while others suffered from terrible acting that was way too over the top for comfort. Some movies just shouldn’t have been made in the first place since they were trying to build off of something that had already been tapped out. Whatever the case the summer of 2017 was not a great time for movies as was shown.
There was one bright spot, but it was simply too good to come anywhere near this list.
5. Monster Trucks
Underground monsters are released when an oil company goes too far with their fracking operation and damage the monsters’ environment. Two of them are captured but the third gets away and is eventually befriended by a high school senior. This film was a little cute for what it was, but it’s kind of understandable what they were trying to do. It was just a bad attempt.
4. The Mummy
I’d like to say that this one has just been made way too many times but the truth is that this time around it was attempting to one up the other movies by adding in details that did make sense but didn’t mesh. The mummy is a female, okay, that’s cool. She’s bent on taking over the world, meh, alright. She made a deal with an ancient Egyptian god, huh boy, still not the worst. But bringing Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde into the mix? Come on now Hollywood.
3. Justice League
It’s a “we’ve got to keep up with Marvel so it’s time to team up” kind of movie to be honest. Even if the Justice League is older than the Avengers, which it is, they kind of missed the bus when it came to appearing on film. At this point they’re still just barely a cohesive unit and have yet to really take on something like what the Avengers will be facing coming up in 2018. Despite coming first they’re kind of finishing last at the moment.
2. Ghost In the Shell
A lot of people love to see Scarlett Johansson kicking the crap out of people on film, but this movie was something very different than anything she’s done before, and not in a good way. Instead of being the person that’s cold, cocky, confident, and almost always has herself under control she was a little off in this film. It was also bashed for the fact that she didn’t look enough like the lead character.
1. Blade Runner 2049
The negative showing at the box office was kind of a surprise for this one since the reviews were pretty good. It could have been the fact that there was just too much of everything to really make it work. For being so anticipated though it didn’t come off as the blockbuster it was supposed to be.
There were more flops over the summer, but these were the ones that were really noticeable.
