I’m not sure anything was really proven when Mark Cuban, the owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, managed a Dairy Queen for a day. After all the comments he made were towards a referee as expressed his doubt that the man could manage a Dairy Queen since he obviously couldn’t manage a basketball game in Cuban’s opinion. Cuban has been a source of controversy for his team in the past and is considered to be one of the biggest mouthpieces in the league by some. The idea of Dairy Queen management getting upset at what he said using their name is a bit strange but not worth calling them out for it. Instead it seems kind of foolish that they thought a single day working in a Dairy Queen would break him.
Having worked as a bartender and running his own business before becoming the owner of a professional basketball team Cuban likely had no trouble getting the job done and showing that he was more than up to the challenge. It doesn’t mean you have to like the guy, but unless he trips up there’s really no easy way to call him out on his words. After all if he’s been through the struggle of building himself up throughout the years and taking care of an entire organization, well the GM and others do that but he still has certain duties to tend to, then it’s likely that he can whip up a soft-serve cone or a Blizzard treat for one person after another throughout a single day.
I feel for those folks that thought his words were a bit callous and not very well thought out, but the truth of it is that even though he is a bit cocky, Cuban is a guy that can back it up more often than not. He might be kind of an immature detriment to his team at times but he’s still the owner and he’s still made his way in the world regardless of what people think. I’ve been in the same boat as people that still think that owners and higher-ups in any organization are those that got there by kissing a lot of butt and stepping on anyone and everyone in their way to get what they wanted. It’s true that some people do this and get their way. It’s very unfair and often breeds resentment, but not everyone at the top is like this. Some people have worked long, hard hours in order to get what they want and have come up with ideas of their own that have made them rich.
Cuban isn’t a guy you have to like, but if you challenge him with anything that has to do with business or serving people keep in mind that like a lot of other folks he’s served his time behind a counter. He very likely knows what it would take to get through one day and still be smiling at the end. One week would have been better, or even one month, but that wouldn’t have happened.
