A Thrawn Sequel is Coming: What We Know So Far

Plenty of news has come from the 2017 New York Comic Con. One of the announcements came from Timothy Zahn at the Lucasfilm Publishing panel. He told reporters that there will be a sequel to ‘Thrawn’, his bestselling novel. Zahn revealed that the sequel is scheduled for release in the summer of 2018 and will be called ‘Thrawn: Alliances’.

In addition to revealing the name and the time of release, Zahn also gave some further information about the book relating to a certain Dark Lord of the Sith who will appear in the novel. He said he wanted to up the game but wasn’t sure how he could do this but decided Darth Vadar was the solution to this.

He revealed this information by showing a picture of Darth Vadar. This may surprise some fans that he chose this character rather than Anakin Skywalker as it is Skywalker who already has a relationship with Thrawn. Those who have read ‘Thrawn’ will know that Thrawn met Anakin during the Clone Wars and that this was way before Thrawn began his ascent into the Imperial Navy.

Zahn went on to say that he has already turned it in. Therefore, it is a done deal rather than merely a plan. So, is there the potential for the sequel to become a hit with fans of Thrawn? To predict this, you should take a look at the first novel and the trilogy that preceded it.

The original ‘Thrawn’ series is a trilogy based on the Star Wars character, Grand Admiral Thrawn, that Timothy Zahn created. The three books were released between 1991 and 1993. The series consisted of ‘Heir to the Empire’, ‘Dark Force Rising’, and ‘The Last Command’. These books were such a success, both commercially and critically, that they were credited with revitalizing the Star Wars franchise.

On April 11, 2017, ‘Thrawn’ was published by Del Rey books. This novel is also known as ‘Star Wars: Thrawn’. The story is about the origins of Grand Admiral Thrawn. There were three different editions of this published. The first was the standard addition and this had a white cover that featured the split face of Thrawn. The exclusive edition of Barnes & Noble has the same image on a black cover with a double sided-poster inside with a timeline of the novel on one side and a portrait of Thrawn on the other. Finally, the Star Wars Celebration limited edition published by Del Rey has a portrait of Thrawn on the back and is textless on the front. This edition contains special endpapers. This novel was critically well received and inspired a comic book adaptation. This was announced by Marvel Comics in July 2017.

As the first novel was such a success, it is little wonder that Timothy Zahn has written a sequel and it is likely that fans of Star Wars will be rushing out to buy the book as soon as it is released. They still have a little while to wait yet before the sequel is published but this will surely only add to the anticipation leading up to the publication of ‘Thrawn: Alliances’.
