The funniest girls in New York City are back at it again with the season 4 premiere of Broad City. In the previous seasons, main characters Abbi and Ilana have had their shares of ups and downs with lots of laughter in between. They’ve given us outsiders a realistic attempt at getting to know the city they live and thrive in. They’ve also introduced us to the many wondrous things that make life there inexplicably unique and somewhat desirable. They’re back this season to give us some more of what they’re already so good at, and the premiere gave us great hopes for a great season. Here are 5 things we learned from the Broad City episode that premiered on September 13.
1. The Sliding Doors idea is still pretty awesome.
A la Gwyneth, the premiere showed us the girls in alternate realities: one ends up with them being together in the end and the other ends with them both dead. Of course, we learned that reality is always better than the alternate no matter how crappy or cruel it might be. We also learned that when you miss your F train in the city, you shouldn’t fret because there’s probably a reason why you did.
2. New York is still central to the show.
While we didn’t doubt this would be the case, the premiere just solidified it by giving the popular coffee shop, Grey Dog, a cameo. While for most of us outsiders this might mean nothing, many NYC residents are smiling at the way Broad City just gave props, not to the usual NY mentionables, but to a true local hotspot most tourist wouldn’t have a clue about. Thanks to the show, now we know.
3. We learned that 2011 was actually a good year.
The flashback highlighted how the girls met, but we also saw how good we had it then. We still had President Obama in the office, for one. We also experienced the royal wedding of our generation, Oprah’s final episode, and Beyonce’s pregnancy. However, the best part of the premiere is that it actually showed us the beginnings of a friendship that we’ve also grown to treasure even though we’re only the audience.
4. Anything can really happen in New York.
Well, the reality is anything can happen anywhere. But you can’t really miss the city’s F train if you’re not in the city, nor can you have an unexpected run in with the NYC Snipper if you aren’t in the city either. The premiere showed us the same NY uniqueness that we’ve been seeing in the last 3 years, and it’s showed us that we can’t even possibly imagine what goes on in that concrete jungle.
5. Lastly, we learned that one of the saddest things in the world is eating fro-yo alone from that scene where Abbi is sadly consuming hers solo.
Fro-yo is never meant to be eaten solo, let alone NY pizza slices, brunch, or anything else for that matter. Food tastes better with company, and that’s why we love this show so much. It gives us friendship at its worst, but it also gives it to us at its best.
