When the Super Mario Bros. came out in 1993 people were excited to see how it would make the jump from a computer game to big screen action. However, many people were disappointed and the film didn’t really live up to expectations. Now, more than 25 years later, Luigi and Mario are getting a second chance at being film stars and there are several reasons why people are more optimistic about this film.
The main thing that has got people excited is that this film will actually be animated. This will allow the characters and the situations to be more like people are used to seeing them in the games. The first film starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi and while these are both very good actor, a lot of fans felt there was just something not quite right about having the characters played by actors. Nintendo must have always felt that there was more they could do in terms of making a successful Mario Bros movie and they have now decided that the time is right.
It will be made by Illumination which is the animation studio that is behind the Despicable Me franchise. This gives fans confidence that the movie will be made well and that no sacrifices will be made in terms of budget. The team at Illumination also know what it takes to make a successful animated movie as they have shown in the past. As well as creating Despicable Me they have also produced the successful Minions spin-off and the box office hit Sing.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario and other Nintendo characters will also be closely involved in the production of the movie. Fans are hoping that this means that the direction of the film will not veer too far away from the essence of the games. An example of the sort of thing that fans would want to avoid would be the upcoming Pokemon movie Detective Pikachu. People are generally a bit puzzled as to why Pikachu is a detective and this makes them unsure of the direction that the movie will take.
The Wall Street Journal had previously reported that a movie was in the pipeline but this has now been confirmed by Nintendo on Twitter. The announcement also included confirmation that Miyamoto would produce the film alongside Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination and the brains behind the Minions.
There have been no further details issued about casting or when the film is expected to be released. There is a lot of interest in the Super Mario franchise at the moment because of the recent launch of the very successful Super Mario Odyssey. A Mario Kart Tour game is also due to be released very soon which people will be able to download as an app and play on their smartphones. It would make sense for the movie to be released as soon as possible to capitalize on this interest. On the other hand though the team will not want to rush things and risk this movie being as disappointing as the first attempt.
