The Vampire Diaries: The CW is Develping a Spin-Off About The Originals

The Vampire Diaries could be getting a spin-off! The CW is currently developing a show that could serve as a new series focused on The Originals.
The CW is essentially trying to franchise one of its most popular shows by creating “The Originals”, which will star Joseph Morgan as Klaus. The “pilot” will act as an episode of The Vampire Diaries this season and will air on April 25. In the episode, Klaus returns to New Orleans (a town he helped build centuries ago) and is reunited with someone from his past: a former protégé named Marcel. Phoebe Tonkin, who plays the werewolf Hayley on Vampire Diaries, is also set to star.
Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec will write the episode and serve as showrunner on the new project if it earns a series order (Kevin Williamson will not be involved).
Anyone will tell you that sometimes spin-offs work and sometimes they don’t. Angel, the spin-off created from the WB channel’s Buffy ran for five seasons and the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off Private Practice has also lasted many years. But for every success there’s a failed show like The Finder (the Bones spin-off), which only lasted a season, or the Gossip Girl spin-off that had a back-door pilot but never came to fruition.
Still, the characters and stories on this spin-off would generally be known to fans of The Vampire Diaries and it’s possible that The CW will have another hit on its hands.
