The Mindy Project Season 3 Episode 15 Review: “Dinner at the Castellanos”

The Mindy Project

Last night’s The Mindy Project was perfect.  The structure may have felt different than a normal episode because there was no B story but that was barely noticeable as there was so much else going on.  My only wish is that Richie had been present for an episode all about the Castellanos!

Mindy could never find the right time to tell Danny that she’s pregnant over video chats, so she planned a visit back to New York, where they’d go away for a weekend.  Their plans are promptly interrupted when Alan and Little Dani Castellano surprise Danny in New York, too.  Danny and his dad only recently reconnected last year, but it’s clear that Alan is still pretty scummy.  He left Annette and the kids when they were younger, and now he wants to dump his daughter on Danny, too.  Being the good person he is, Danny agreed to take his sister in for a little while, but I’m glad Mindy and Annette squashed that idea.

Mindy actually called Dani out on her crap right at the dinner table.  She has years of experience acting like a psycho to get what she wants, and she recognizes that behavior instantly.  So what if Dani is tired of living in a boring town with her elderly father.  It’s the hand she’s been dealt in life, and it is wildly immature of Alan to expect to pass off all his fatherly duties onto his son.  Even though Danny seems to have forgiven Alan and admits he “learned a lot from Alan Thicke” growing up, he should have been able to depend on Alan Castellano instead.

The whole dinner at Annette’s house was hilarious.  Annette was trying to show off in front of her ex by donning a blonde wig and inviting her doctor boyfriend over, too.  She went over the top with preparing eels for dinner, but actually Mindy insisted on helping.  Little did she know that she’d literally be killing live eels in the bathtub.  Haha!

Mindy and Danny got into an argument right at the table when Dani slapped her.  I didn’t like Danny’s reaction and insistence that this is all a family matter that she doesn’t have to be there for.  The whole episode was leading up to him learning that she’s pregnant, and all along she’s been trying to impose on his “family” time.  Like Peter told Mindy when she called him to see how Houston is, “family doesn’t wait to be invited. It’s like HPV.”  After Annette found out that Mindy is pregnant and finally told Danny, the chase scene to find Mindy was reminiscent of the second season finale, only this time with a Beyonce song.  Just like that, Mindy and Danny are officially family.

Notable quotables:

-”Your dad, huh? So this is who we have to thank for a lifetime of grouchiness. If you hurt this boy again I will hurt you.” – Morgan upon meeting Danny’s father

-”I love family traditions.  In my family on Thanksgiving, I make everyone gather round for a fashion show.” – Mindy giving me hope that next season we get to see a Thanksgiving with the Lahiris

-“Don’t step to me. I murdered a bunch of eels tonight.” – Mindy defending herself to Danny
