The Flash Season 1 Episode 20 Review: ”The Trap”

The Flash

This week’s The Flash was one of the season’s most spectacular episodes, as secrets finally came out about Harrison Wells, while Iris finally learned Barry’s secret.

The episode picks up right where we left off where Team Flash discovers Gideon and the newspaper front page from the future, which gives us a lot of insight into what that time looks like for our heroes. I loved seeing Hawkgirl mentioned (the character will be played by Ciara Renée on the Arrow/Flash spin-off that is possibly going to be called Legends of Tomorrow) and that the Arrow is now being referred to as “Green Arrow.” But of course, the greatest Easter Egg of them all was discovering who had written the article about The Flash disappearing, and that person was Iris West-Allen.

While Barry may not have an island like Oliver does, I think Barry’s coma is something that you can use as an “island” in a way for the other characters, and this week introduced that concept. We see how Harrison and Joe first met and the little past they had before Barry was moved to S.T.A.R. Labs. The stand out moment from the flashbacks, though,  was without doubt Candice Patton’s fantastic performance, as Iris expressed to Barry how he brought her family back together and just how much she missed him. Patton was, in my opinion, the MVP of this episode, in both the flashbacks and the present. She was especially great as Iris finally learns that Barry is The Flash in a very electric way (pun intended). I loved that she connected the dots by remembering that moment at the hospital. I’m just glad she finally knows.

Also in this episode, Cisco finally gets to experience what happened in that other timeline, where Harrison brutally murdered him. The way they did it was pretty cool, especially from a visual standpoint, because the environment he was in, while it looked like he was really there, the color tones were just slightly off, indicating how it was, in fact, a dream. The glasses Cisco uses were also pretty cool Easter egg to his comic counterpart Vibe, who wears incredibly similar tech-glasses as his mask. Every time Cisco finds  himself in these risky situations, I keep getting more and more concerned that The Flash might kill him off, but with the ever-growing popularity of Cisco’s character, that seems less and less like a possibility.

It’s a Flash Fact that Tom Cavanagh’s performance since the pilot has been perfect, but this episode really showcased Eobard’s true nature. Characters throughout the episode state that it’s confusing why Harrison is helping Barry, being a mentor to him while still being the man who murdered his mother. In the flashbacks at the end of the hour, we see his sinister side and his true hatred towards Barry, as he mentions that he will never forgive Barry for what he did to him, which only makes this mystery more compelling. It was just deliciously twisted to see Harrison finally go full-on evil on Barry; it made me appreciate the casting of Cavanagh even more.

Overall, “The Trap” was a pretty strong episode of The Flash that lived up to its hype by revealing ton of secrets, while also introducing new mysteries, including what Eddie’s connection is with Eobard in the Thawne line-up. Three episodes left to go before the season is over, and based on photos as well as promos that have been coming out lately, it’s only going to get better!

The Flash airs on Tuesday nights, 8/7c on The CW.
