There is this saying “pay it forward” which encourages people to do what they can to assist others and not necessarily help those who have been there for them, to avoid limiting our generous acts. For Richard, although the help he extends does have a price, he still uses his skills, time, money and other resources to help struggling garages from falling apart completely. Through “Garage Rehab,” Richard and his team have traveled across different states in the U.S. to pick run-down business from the ground by doing a total overhaul that takes a week. The time limit is usually a bit of a challenge depending on the work that has to be done, but other factors come into play to make the job even more difficult. Below are the five biggest challenges Garage Rehab ever took on since premiering on Discovery Channel.
1. Jacob’s Automotive
Operating a business to be successful needs pure dedication and managerial skills especially when you have combined different types of operations. Besides, whenever you bring family into your business, things will get rough a bit, but then we are stuck with family, so we try and make it work. Such was the case on “Jacob’s Automotive” episode. The business is not only comprised of a family-run garage but also a service station and convenience store. Until the airing of this episode, no other rehab had been as complex as this one therefore when Richard and the team go to Sturgis, South Dakota to revamp this garage it is a race against time as they try to complete in time for its grand opening.
2. Abel Racing
The size of something can sometimes either be an impediment or a propeller to the accomplishment of specific goals. In a business, the larger the size, the more the resources one needs until you reach the break-even point and subsequently, economies of scale. For the “Abel Racing” episode, which was in 2017, Richard and his crew took on the largest shop they had ever worked on by then. The speed shop, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, measured 8,000 square feet and the team had a hard time trying to turn it around with the job almost proving to be an impossible feat to finish. However, since the co-owner was a genius tuner, they decided to take on the responsibility.
3. Quick Stop Auto Repair
We always hear that once you believe in yourself, you are halfway there so what happens when you do not have any self-esteem left in you anymore? Being an entrepreneur needs confidence in all the decisions you make otherwise even the employees will also second guess you. Consequently, when Richard and the crew took on “Quick Stop Auto Repair,” they did not know they had taken one of their biggest challenges yet. The shop had seen its better days, and instead of moving with the times, it chose to stay in the old era. Moreover, the owner no longer had any pride left in the shop or himself; maybe that is why he had allowed his business to be the filthiest the team has ever seen. Well, rehabbing a company is one thing but restoring one’s pride, that is another matter altogether, and the team had its work cut out for them.
4. Scotty’s Automotive
The point of investing in something is for you to get your money back and make some more too. However, some habits keep us from being profitable, and Richard learned this through the “Scotty’s Automotive” episode which aired on 13th September 2017. Richard invests in garages that are having a hard time making money, but in this episode, the owner had to blame since he struggled from hoarding. Therefore for Richard to make his money back, he needed to make sure that the owner broke free from the chains of hoarding that were keeping him from running a great business.
5. Northrich Collision
Change is inevitable, and we have to adapt to survive as other market dynamics keep shifting. In the first season of “Garage Rehab,” Richard and his team had capped their investment to 100,000 dollars. However, the second season has seen them take on enormous challenges that call for more money. In this particular episode, the team takes its most massive build in the entire “Garage Rehab” history, by working on a 20,000 square feet garage. The size begs for more funds, and Richard has to commit $300,000 of his money which is a significant amount. However, besides the considerable investment, Richard has to deal with a family feud that makes the project even more of a challenge.
