If you don’t know who Deborah Cox is you might not be a big fan of R&B. That’s okay and all but seeing as how she started out as a backup singer for Celine Dion and has been an award-winning artist throughout the years she’s not exactly someone you’d call a nobody, especially given that she has been in the business for a couple of decades and has been doing pretty well. Her songs are, as you might expect, usually about love and relationships but they’re done in a way that’s quite captivating as she pours her heart and soul into each one and makes you want to believe the message she’s sending. Some men might look at them and yawn, some women might too, but for those that love R&B and perhaps even know that she’s been called the best R&B singer in Canada it’s easy to see how she’s amassed the kind of popularity she has.
Here are some of her top songs.
5. Things Just Ain’t the Same
Like a lot of R&B songs she starts out kind of slow when the songs get going and there’s a lot of emotion involved. This is part of what the genre is about after all since that’s what attracts people to it and tends to make it so popular. The whole feeling behind it is one that some people get and other people don’t. But before you go blaming this on a lack of empathy concerning those that don’t get this kind of music or its message, one has to remember that the music that people sing speaks to everyone in a different way. To some R&B says everything when it comes to emotions, but to others it’s a very slow and in some cases drawn out way of saying what they feel, rather than a short and succinct method to convey a very real emotion.
4. Absolutely Not
Some R&B songs do manage to pump it up a bit and really get into the kind of movement that makes you want to get on your feet and do something. This one in particular seems like it would be a good dance song and something you might hear in a club. That being said it’s something that seems to pull away from the norm when it comes to what Cox sings, though in a good way since it shows the kind of diversity that a musician should have in order to display that not all their music sounds the same. The pace kind of slows down a bit throughout the song but it’s still a lot faster moving than others.
3. Who Do U Love
There’s nothing worse than a woman that feels like she’s been spurned, cheated on, or betrayed since she’s always going to get her revenge in one fashion or another. In some cases the whole situation seems to be something that gets blown out of proportion, especially when the guy acts like a fool and the woman has friends that don’t care for him in the first place. The guy is almost never right in cases like this and the group of friends that encourage the woman to simply lash out and say that he’s not worth her time don’t tend to make things any better. Whether or not this is the message that’s being conveyed in the song it still seems that there’s no need to converse when a person can simply follow their friends and discourage any chance to talk.
2. We Can’t Be Friends
Relationships are obviously not meant to be easy, nor are they meant to be simple to figure out at all times. But overall it’s too easy to say it’s over without giving it a chance to work out. In some cases however working it out isn’t exactly the best route since a person needs to know when to call it quits and move on. In this video and many others there is a general feeling that the couple that are attempting to work things out or are splitting up did so for a reason and it’s tearing them apart. Again, relationships aren’t supposed to be easy, especially since it takes the hard work of both people in the relationship to really make things move forward.
1. Nobody’s Supposed to be Here
This song actually won her a couple of awards and it’s easy to see why since it sounds like something a lot of people would like and is also one of those that has likely been played over and over for those that are willing to listen. One thing about any of these videos however is that there is at least the feeling that there’s a bit difficulty when it comes to meeting or breaking up with someone. Too many videos seem to make it an easy and effortless thing.
She’s definitely earned her recognition.
