The Big Bang Theory Review: Babies & Cabins & Bears. Oh My!

The Big Bang Theory

“So bears that size really exist? I’m guessing you’ve got to do more than win a carnival game to get something like that.” That’s what I spent most of this episode thinking, after I saw the giant bear for the first time. It was a little distracting. The Big Bang Theory is now in its final string of episodes for the season, and while “The Big Bear Precipitation” certainly had its moments, it mostly fell flat, trying to hit emotional beats that weren’t there.

This week on The Big Bang Theory: Howard and Bernadette try to figure out how to draw boundaries with Raj, who is really excited about their baby. Meanwhile, Sheldon, Amy, Leonard, and Penny go up to a cabin in the woods for a weekend. When they get rained in, secrets start to come out.

I appreciated what this episode was trying to do. For the most part, the characters felt like normal human beings in relatively organic situations. For whatever reason, though, the stories fell flat for me. I’m not sure exactly, but a lot of it is me not liking “Sad-Sack Raj” as I like to call him. Raj has an adorable relationship with Howard, but I don’t like the overly clingy, hyper-emotional Raj. Stuart is a much better sad sack for this show than Raj, and I really think Raj needs to develop past it.  The baby story was cute, though.

I thought the cabin story was fine, too. Putting Sheldon in seclusion clearly has its merits. However, the Leonard and Penny keeping secrets and stuff was just a little Season 2 or 3 for me. The way they dealt with it has changed for the better, but the fact that they did in the first place was not consistent with the growth they’ve displayed over the past few years. And, frankly, Sheldon did not get drunk enough for my liking.

Though this wasn’t my favorite episode, there were still some great, funny moments. Here are some of my favorite quotes/moments from the episode:

  • “She. But I could get her.”- Penny
  • “Did you get graham crackers? I mean..er…is the baby okay?”- Howard, but eerily like me
  • “That is the least Jewish thing I’ve ever seen in my life”- Howard
  • “Did you see they still have a video rental place? It’s like Colonial Williamsburg!”- Leonard
  • Everything physical with Raj and the giant bear was fantastic.
  • “Never have I ever used Sheldon’s toothbrush to clean the sink.”- Leonard
  • “Never should’ve told you about Alvin and the Chipmunks”. No Leonard. You should have told no one.

While most of the emotional beats fell flat, there was still plenty to laugh at in this week’s episode. Hopefully, the emotional stakes will be higher as Big Bang races toward the end of the 9th season. But I suppose if they keep the jokes funny, I will still be happy.
