This was a sad summer for the fans of the cop drama Rookie Blue. The Canadian based show was a summer staple for ABC, but it wrapped in 2015. Now there’s some good news! Tassie Cameron, one of that show’s three creators, has a new series coming to ABC in 2017.
The Hollywood Reporter announced that Cameron’s show, 10 Years In the Valley, is a 10 episode straight-to-series pick up by ABC. Another piece of good news is that the show will star Kyra Sedgwick from TNT‘s The Closer!
This is an exciting combination! A writer known for creating complex roles for women paired with an actress wonderful at portraying them means great TV!
What adds even more positive vibes to this news? The production company for 10 Years in the Valley is SkyDance Television. Among the shows this young company has put out is Netflix’s Emmy-nominated show Grace and Frankie – which stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. SkyDance is helmed by Marcy Ross – whose track record is just plain cool! For instance, one of the first things on it is that she helped develop Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Enough said.
Because both Rookie Blue and The Closer were procedural dramas, the concept for 10 Years in the Valley is an interesting twist for both Cameron and Sedgwick.
The hourlong drama centers on Jane Sadler (Sedgwick), an overworked television producer and single mother dealing with a fractious separation. When her young daughter goes missing in the middle of the night, Jane’s world – and her controversial police series – implodes. Life imitates art: Everything’s a mystery, everyone has a secret, and no one can be trusted (The Hollywood Reporter).
10 Years in the Valley was originally going to star Demi Moore. Although Moore is an equally fabulous actress, there’s something a little meta about this Sedgwick/Cameron pairing. Both women have in fact been in a producer’s role for a police drama. Now their world of make-believe is about…being a producer of a show about police. That’s pretty cool!
Since I enjoyed both Rookie Blue and The Closer, I’m really looking forward to this new show. Will you be tuning in? Drop me a line in the comments and let me know what you think!
