Syfy Renews 12 Monkeys for Season 2

12 Monkeys

12 Monkeys will be hanging around Syfy for another year. The freshman drama, which was inspired by the 1995 film of the same name, was renewed for a second season by the network today.

Syfy’s 12 Monkeys stars Aaron Stanford (Nikita) as Cole, a man that travels back in time from the disastrous future to the present day from in an attempt to find and destroy a deadly plague that will, if not stopped, kill essentially the entire human race. In addition to Stanford, 12 Monkeys‘ cast also includes Amanda Schull as Cassandra, Kirk Acevendo as Ramse, Demore Barnes as Whitley, and Noah Bean (who, like Stanford, also starred in The CW’s Nikita) as Aaron.

“We are absolutely committed to 12 Monkeys, and have been incredibly impressed by the outstanding critical and audience praise the series has earned,” said Syfy President Dave Howe. “The talent both on and off-screen have delivered a series that has us all on the edge of our seats, providing exactly the smart, exciting storytelling Syfy is known for.”

12 Monkeys premiered back in January to an audience of 1.35 million total viewers and a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demo. While the show’s ratings have dropped in the weeks since its premiere, it still performs pretty well, especially when L3 viewership is factored in.

Season 2 of 12 Monkeys is expected to air sometime in 2016 and will see a change in showrunners. Current showrunner Natalie Chaidez will step down as she begins to prep her own Syfy series, Hunters. Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, both co-executive producers on the series, will step up and take her place after she leaves.

12 Monkeys airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on Syfy.
