Supernatural 8.16 Review: Of Gods and Winchesters

SupernaturalThe Lying Game

Perhaps the most poignant moments of an already emotional episode involved the scenes between Sam and Dean about the trials. Sam continues to hide his symptoms from Dean, who is not oblivious to what’s happening to his brother. Dean might not know exactly what is up with Sam, but he knows that his brother is being cagey. At this point, I don’t think that Sam is lying for the sake of lying, or even lying so that Dean doesn’t insist that he take on the trials. I think Sam is failing to tell the truth because he’s afraid for himself and he’s afraid about worrying his brother. Their experience with Prometheus has made Sam doubt that he can get through the trials alive, but Dean is determined that he will. Dean can only rarely summon the drive to survive for himself, but he always has reserves of conviction when it comes to Sam’s survival.

What’s most telling was Dean’s prayer to Castiel at the end of the episode. Dean’s not angry about the secrets that Sam is keeping, he’s terrified for his brother. It’s not often that Dean allows himself to feel vulnerable enough to pray, but he begged Castiel to watch out for Sam. Unfortunately, Castiel isn’t answering any prayers right now and I think that Dean realizes, once again, how utterly alone he and Sam are. That’s not to say that they don’t have allies, because they clearly do (although the number is ever dwindling). And that’s not to say that Castiel wouldn’t help them if he wasn’t being manipulated by Naomi, because I believe he would. But there have been many moments in Sam and Dean’s journey when the future feels hopeless and they’ve felt alone except for each other (and, sometimes, simply alone, even despite each other). These are the moments that they feel the most desperate, the moments that lead to terrible choices. I hope that neither of them have to make a terrible choice now.

Final Thoughts

I loved how excited Dean was about being a “legacy” of the Men of Letters and the awkward pause from the rest of the group. Plus, Hayley’s declaration that fulgerite is sold in all sorts of New Age stores (thus cancelling out the need to steal it from someone rich) and Dean’s reaction to the news was priceless.

The actor who was playing Zeus looked like he was having a ball in the roll. Casting an actor in that type of role must be difficult because you need someone who looks like he can handle the gravitas to play someone so powerful and yet is relatable. Supernatural hit the jackpot when they cast Julian Richings and Death and I thought that John Novak, who played Zeus, was also very convincing for a lot of the same reasons.

Overall, I was extremely satisfied with this week’s Supernatural. All of the individual pieces came together for an episode that really struck a cord with me.

Supernatural is on hiatus until March 20, but when the show returns we’re jumping right back into the myth arc. Castiel returns from Heaven with a quest for the Winchesters and they’re also reunited with Meg. Watch a preview.
