I can’t call it the “year of the theme park” because not all theme parks are being opened in 2017. However, perhaps we can call it the “theme park renaissance?” or something to that extent? In the last year or so we’ve seen numerous announcements and developments on the theme park front and most of them have been movie and studio related. Back in May, the Pandora themed park opened up at Disney, we got word that their Star Wars park will open in 2019, Marvel has its own park coming and that’s just the big names. Now it’s Studio Ghibli’s turn. According to Geek Tyrant:
The park is known as “Ghibli Park”, and it will be opening outside Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The park will be based in the world of My Neighbor Totoro, but before you start thinking you’re going to be riding a giant Cat Bus Rollercoaster, you should know that the park is not planning on having rides. It will allow visitors to enjoy flowers and trees with Totoro themed things around. So it’s not going to be your average theme park.
The park will be located on a 200 hectare plot of land where Satsuki and Mei’s house was recreated for the 2005 World’s Fair. They are hoping to open the park by 2020. It sounds beautiful, and very peaceful, which is how I feel a Ghibli-Land should be.
