Remember that time when Nicole Kidman did her awkward ‘seal clap’ at the Oscars? Yeah, a few other people might remember it as well though a lot of people have probably let it go by now. Of course whenever a celebrity does something unusual or worthy of an eyebrow raise you simply know it’s going to be something that we remember, especially if it’s being broadcast on live TV. Kidman had a decent excuse for why it looked like she forgot just how a regular clap goes however, though it was something that might actually confuse people a little more simply because it makes only a little more sense.
She was wearing a huge diamond ring on one hand at the time and enough jewelry on her hands to feed a third world country for a few months at the very least if not longer, and the excuse for her odd clapping was that she didn’t want to damage it. The jewelry was on loan for the Oscars and she was afraid of doing anything to it that might count as damage before it went back. Any way you say that it still seems kind of odd since a lot of jewelry is designed to take at least a little punishment since anything that goes on your hands has to be kind of tough to withstand anything that might happen by accident. So it’s kind of odd to think that clapping would really do that much damage to a diamond ring, unless of course you’re slamming your hands together like the Hulk repeatedly. Maybe jewelry of this type is simply more fragile than we think, but it seems doubtful. Diamonds, which are known to be quite hard and even durable, can take a pretty good whack before being broken, and it seems like Kidman wouldn’t have the necessary strength to really crack one or even damage the housing in which they’re set.
But she’s sticking with her explanation so it goes without saying that she had her opinion about it. But loaning out jewelry to an occasion such as the Oscars seems to be a big thing so you would almost think that the jewelers would be well-insured and wouldn’t worry too much about any kind of damage that might occur unless it was something so bad that they had to redo the entire piece. And given that those walking the red carpet to attend the awards show are probably doing whatever they can to not mess up anything they’re wearing it seems as though the jewelry would have been safer than if it had been locked away given the level of anxiety this can probably cause.
Also it seems like she kind of forgot how to clap somewhere in the middle, as she pauses and seems to be thinking about something other than making her hands meet for a split second before she goes back to an awkward clap. Remember, it’s all water under the bridge now and not as important, but since it’s on the internet it’s there forever.
