Steven Spielberg May Be Directing a Film about Iconic Composer Leonard Bernstein

Despite having a couple of projects already in the works Steven Spielberg has made it seem as though he might be interested in directing a film about the iconic composer Leonard Bernstein. If you don’t know who Bernstein was, he passed away in 1990, then you should probably Google his name and look him up. He’s only one of the greatest composers the world has ever known, as he created music for the well known West Side Story, Candide, Peter Pan, and many other productions. To think that Spielberg might actually halt production on one of his projects to study the life of Bernstein isn’t too far out there really since it could make a great story, especially with Spielberg directing.

Right now Spielberg reportedly has West Side Story and Indiana Jones 5 on his plate to deal with, but he could possibly table West Side Story to focus on the story of Leonard Bernstein. It’s already been reported that he had a secret table read concerning this matter. It could be that he’s really thinking about it since Spielberg usually does table reads when he’s really interested in developing a story. It could be all rumor as well, but at this point we can only hope that he might take on a project like the life of Bernstein.

There are likely a lot of directors that could take on a project of this scope and give it a good deal of attention that might make it sing and pop to an audience. But Spielberg has something to his works that others just don’t seem to get. Whatever he touches seems to come to life in a way that’s hard to really fathom or explain, but it blows you away all the same. He has this uncanny knack for telling a story in a way that is both truthful and exciting all at once. It might be that the original story wasn’t that exciting or thrilling, but somehow Spielberg finds the magic that might not have been visible to anyone in that moment in time and delivers it to the audience so that they can marvel in how something like this came to be. In essence he grabs hold of the attention his film is given and makes people see what he’s seeing in order to really get them on board with what he’s trying to present to them. A good director doesn’t attempt to lead people to the point they’re trying to make, they present the audience with something that might interest them and then take them on a trip down that particular trail, unveiling just a bit at a time as they continue to lead the audience to the revelation they’re attempting to show.

That’s what Spielberg does. Even if he gives you the full picture up front and in your face you still want to know what’s coming next since you’ve become interested and therefore invested in the story. So quite honestly it would be interesting to see just what he could do with such a story.
