Rolling around with Steven Spielberg for a personal tour behind the scenes is like a sneak peek into the movie magic that we tend to love seeing. Just ambling around the back lots and main streets of Universal Studios is like a walk down memory lane for Steven, as he can recall a lot of the things that went into the studios in the early days and what’s changed since. It’s amazing that some of the sets never seem to get torn down and get re-used from time to time, such as the Bates Motel. That place used to instill nightmares in viewers whenever a new movie came out, and could still have that kind of effect seeing as how it was a creepy movie back then and still is today.
The Jaws set is a little saddening as it seems that they took the original Orca out, the boat that ferried the three men out to do battle with the giant shark. Dry rot and termites will do that however, but it seems that Spielberg is going to at least attempt to get the boat rebuilt just so that it can be used for tours and a bit of nostalgia. Even directors and others involved with the movies get a bit nostalgic at times after all. Given that Jaws was the one movie that kind of allowed Spielberg the freedom he wanted and needed to express his own ideas however it would make sense that it would be the one that he would return to again and again. After all Spielberg’s been at this particular game for a long time now, and he’s done a lot in his career that has been both awesome and in some cases so-so, but one thing is certain and that’s the fact that he was likely made to be a director.
Having started sneaking into the lot when he was 16 years of age it was kind of obvious that he wanted something to do with films, but the act of becoming a director was something that most likely never left his mind once it got firmly stuck in there. It’s a good thing too since for so long now he’s been entertaining the masses and doing his absolute best to leave the kind of legacy he now has. The fact that he’s willing to give a tour like this says a lot, especially that he’s proud of what he does and is glad to share the history and the joy of it to anyone that would like to listen. His career has been a long and storied one thus far but it started and will likely end at Universal Studios where he’s become a legend. It’s not just any place that will name a street after you.
Riding around in a golf cart with Steven Spielberg had to be a lot of fun, and so would picking his brain about the industry and what he remembers from back in the day. Just imagine the stories you would hear.
