Last night on The Late Show, Stephen Colbert took some time to talk a little bit more about the vice presidential debate between Mike Pence and Tim Kaine and the media’s response to it. Many news outlets and sites declared that Pence was the winner of Tuesday’s debate; in fact, the official GOP website had so much faith in Pence that they wrote about his great debate performance two hours before the event even happened. However, could all this new attention and praise for Mike Pence actually end up being a problem because it upstages Donald Trump?
According to a Trump insider, that very well could be the case, with many people suggesting that Trump’s weaker performance in the first presidential debate was somewhat made up for since Mike Pence did so well. When it comes to the two running mate, Pence clearly appears more presidential than Donald Trump and seems more prepared to address the country’s issues, whether you agree with how he would deal with them or not, and it has many Republicans out there wishing that he was the name on the top of the ticket instead of Trump.
“That’s gotta be tough,” Colbert joked. “I mean, as much as I disagree with Donald Trump, the last thing I want is for the guy to feel like he’s being overshadowed. I mean, Trump’s very sensitive. I mean, people praising Mike Pence too much might push Trump over the edge.”
However, Colbert can see the appeal of Pence, calling him “a rock-hard specimen of a man.” Colbert even went as far as to comment about the size of Pence’s hands, saying that they’re “massive.”
“Definitely the hands of a man who could keep a wife,” Colbert said about Pence.
