Stephen Colbert took some time last night on The Late Show to discuss the upcoming presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, also mentioning how The Late Show will be airing live right after the event on Monday night. Colbert touched upon how each of the candidates are preparing for Monday’s debate and specifically talked about Hillary Clinton’s strategy, as she and her team remain unsure of which Donald Trump they’ll be facing on Monday.
So what does Clinton mean by “which Donald Trump”? As Colbert explains, the Democratic candidate is prepping for two different sides of the same, orange-faced coin: the “on-message, disciplined Donald Trump,” or the “freewheeling…Donald Trump.”
“By the way, ‘Feeewheelin’ Donald Trump’ is the worst folk album of all-time,” Colbert jokes.
But The Late Show host sees where Clinton and her team are coming. Like all politicians, Trump has flip-flopped on some issues, but he pushes it even further, constantly changing how he speaks about these problems. Some days, Trump is the angry, loud-mouthed old man telling kids to get off his lawn, but then at other times, he can appear calmer and much more diplomatic.
“I know of only one person who could capture both Trumps at the same time,” Colbert told viewers before showing a clip of Gollum from Lord of the Rings, dubbing in new dialogue so that the ring-obsessed character expresses his conflicted feelings about Mexicans and building a wall.
