Concentrated works followed by ‘holy craps’ seems to be the best way to say it really. Rian Johnson is directing his first ever Star Wars movie and has no doubt already had the pleasure of finding out what just landed in his lap. Hopefully, it sounds like it anyway, he appreciates the entire scope that comes with this movie and the insurmountable responsibility that comes with being the director such an epic as well. Star Wars is no flash in the pan movie after all, it’s an epic journey that’s taken decades to form and has produced legions of fans that are all watching Johnson with a keen eye so as to judge what will happen when the curtain finally raises and Star Wars: The Last Jedi is released.
Will fans applaud Johnson, or will they want to burn him in effigy? There’s really a lot of different ways that things could turn out, but these are about as close to the extremes as fans of Star Wars will come. On one hand you have the old school fans that have read the books, the comics, check out the fan blogs on a routine basis, and know every last vehicle and blaster down to its serial number. Those are the ones that will be looking for the technical details and will dissect the movie frame by frame in order to find out whether or not Johnson has been faithful to the newest canon, I am an old school canon fan but I love the current story. The story of Star Wars is all that matters no matter if Disney did decide to switch things up in a way that kind of abandoned the whole mythos of Star Wars that had been built up over the years.
Then there are the devoted fans that might not get so technical but are going to pay close attention to the story line, the plot, the premise, and will want to know the most intimate connections of the characters in an attempt to make sense of their lineage. This is why Rey is such an important figure and why the bond between her and Kylo, if there is one, will have to be a huge feature. People have been wanting to know who she is and where she came from, before Jakku, and will be looking for that connection throughout the movie. Hopefully Johnson did some soul-searching and stayed faithful to the story no matter that it might not be what people are expecting.
The casual fans and movie goers will be looking for an entertaining movie and it seems safe to say at this point that they shouldn’t be disappointed. Despite this being his first time Johnson does have some cushion in that the story is already there, he just needs to tell it in a way that people will respond to with a positive response and the love that so many have for Star Wars.
