Ichabod comes face to face with an old enemy in the bone-chilling (sorry, can’t resist) conclusion of this two-part Bones/Sleepy Hollow crossover episode. General Howe’s remains are being transported from the Jeffersonian to Sleepy Hollow when Pandora appears and scares the driver away. The witch then places a stone with a Nordic emblem on it and makes herself a General Howe zombie, who later raises his own Draugur army. Ichabod and Abbie now have to find Howe’s primal tomb and defeat him and his army of undead zombies, with the help of Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth, of course.
In the first part of this crossover, when Ichabod and Abbie went to the Jeffersonian Institute to inspect the remains of a headless corpse that they thought was Abraham, I was afraid that Dr. Brennan would find out about Ichabod’s true origin when Angela Montenegro compared Ichabod’s handwriting on the notepad to that of George Washington’s letter, which stated that General Howe’s remains should be transported to Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod managed to save his hide by telling Dr. Brennan that he had inherited the particular handwriting style from an ancestor by the same name. Nice save, Mr. Crane, nice save.
The scene where Hodgins remarked, after seeing Ichabod and Abbie enter Dr. Brennan’s office, that Ichabod was dressed for a cosplay competition that he wasn’t invited to made Ichabod rant that he dresses the way he does for the men that fought the British Redcoats so that the United States could be born. Can’t exactly argue with that. However, Ichabod yelled out “Do I look like I just beamed from the planet Vulcan?” made me think that the time-traveling Patriot must have a lot of time on his hands to binge-watch Star Trek. I also laughed when Dr. Brennan thought that Ichabod and Abbie were friends with benefits when she heard him say that he and Abbie work well together. The look of pure shock on Ichabod’s face made me grin from ear to ear.
Bringing things back to Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod, Abbie, Dr. Brennan, and Agent Booth find Washington’s fake tomb, and I was a bit surprised that Abbie knew that Ichabod’s rings would serve as a key to open it. There wasn’t any mention of it in the episode, so why would Abbie know that Ichabod’s rings are the keys to the place? It would’ve made much more sense if Ichabod was the one to reveal the fact that his rings are the keys to the tomb rather than Abbie, so that we could understand why a basement is not just a basement to Masons. Just saying.
Things then got a bit heated (no pun intended) when Dr. Brennan and Ichabod were trapped in the tomb and blue Greek fire spouted from the hoses in the ceiling. After being rescued by Agent Booth, who shot at the puzzle lock on the wall to open the door, Ichabod’s comment of “You insisted on coming” was a subtle “I told you so” to Dr. Brennan, and Agent Booth’s comment about George Washington being a complete bada** made me chuckle. As Agent Booth ushered Dr. Brennan out of the tomb, Ichabod tells Abbie that he discovered that Greek fire is the Draugurs’ weakness.
The scene back at the archives confused me. There was no scene to show Jenny and Joe mixing the ingredients to make Greek fire, yet Jenny said that they had mixed ten gallons of the stuff and the acquiring of the cheirosiphones used to deploy the legendary blue flame was not mentioned. You can’t just make a weapon appear out of thin air without showing the people at home how it was acquired. I know that you’re pressed for time, Sleepy Hollow writers, but sometimes, a little explanation goes a long way.
Finally, the General and his zombie army are defeated, Sleepy Hollow is not burned to the ground, and Ichabod is starting to let go of the past and move on when Abbie suggests that he ask Zoe out. Speaking of Zoe, the scene at the bowling alley was light and humorous. The gang was dressed up for Halloween, but no one could guess Ichabod’s costume until he revealed that he was supposed to be John Adams and that he spent all night making the vest look authentic. It’s not their fault that they all thought you were dressed normal, Ichabod. Maybe next Halloween you could dress up as something else other than historical figures.
The part where Ichabod was looking through Zoe’s Instagram page made me face-palm, as he tried to understand the meaning behind the photo-sharing social media site. I did a spit take when he pronounced it as “instant gram” rather than “Instagram,” and that he didn’t understand the tagging function. Looks like you still have a lot to learn when it comes to social media, huh, Ichabod?
Overall, this was an okay crossover episode for both Bones and Sleepy Hollow. I liked how elements from both shows integrated into one another as the characters interacted with each other as the storyline progressed. It’s nice to see that Dr. Brennan has a humorous side to her when she pranked her husband/partner Agent Booth with the fake brain treat that she was making for their daughter’s school Halloween party.
The part with the four characters at the bar was comedic as well to an extent. I was rolling my eyes (in humor, of course) when Ichabod said that Benjamin Franklin once gave him a similar drink to Sex On the Beach. If there are going to be any more crossover episodes of Sleepy Hollow, might I suggest doing a crossover with either The Simpsons or maybe Sherlock. It might work if the right storyline came along, and Tom Mison can spend some time at home instead of flying back and forth.
