Deep, dark secrets come to light in this week’s episode of Sleepy Hollow. Pandora has unleashed a whispering wraith that kills people for the secrets that they keep. Joe Corbin also makes an appearance in this episode as he tries to figure out what Jenny and Abbie are up to.
I was a bit confused when I saw Ichabod doing chores around a house that didn’t belong to him. My little cloud of confusion was cleared when it was revealed that the house belongs to Abbie, and that Ichabod is staying with her until he can find a place of his own. It was rather amusing to watch Ichabod do the vacuuming, the laundry, and, apparently, the cooking while singing a nameless tune.
The pure shock on his face when Abbie surprised him as he was looking at/holding her unmentionables was hysterical. When he forgot what I assume was a casserole of some kind in the oven, and the smoke alarm went off, I shook my head at the fact that Ichabod Crane, for all that he had done, can’t cook to save his life. Like Abbie said, “If you can’t stand the heat, use somebody else’s kitchen.”
Later in the episode, Joe grills Jenny about what she and her sister have been up to and why he’s still being kept out of the loop. The younger Mills sister tries to tell the late Sheriff Corbin’s son that he’s better off not knowing about everything that she and Abbie deal with, but that doesn’t stop Joe from being kidnapped by Randall, who is an artifacts dealer like Nick Hawley, as he wanted an artifact that was in Jenny’s possession.
After kicking some serious Randall butt, Jenny reluctantly hands the artifact over in exchange for Joe’s safety and later agrees to let Joe be a new member of their demon-fighting team. Not sure how Ichabod and Abbie will react to having Joe on the team, but I hope that it will go over well.
The monster of the week, the whispering wraith, kind of failed to impress yet again. Sure, the creature is a creepy-looking version of Jack Skellington, and it’s terrifying that it kills people for their deepest darkest secrets, but saying its true name as the way to defeat it was a tad underwhelming. It reminded me of the film Beetlejuice, where if you say the ghoul’s name three times, then he will disappear and when parents would say their child’s full name when the latter is in deep trouble.
I give the writers an A+ for effort in terms of coming up with scary monsters, but they should also think of a more inventive ways to defeat said monsters like they did back in Sleepy Hollow‘s first season. Just saying.
I was intrigued that Ichabod wanted to preserve the archives and make it a national landmark as a way to keep a piece of history and not turn it into a mini-mall, but his efforts were halted, temporarily I hope, when the lady that he was conversing with told him that there are complicated steps to achieving his goal, one of which is that he must be an American citizen. Yes, Ichabod fought for the Americans, but he’s still British by birth and blood. Fingers crossed that he will succeed in saving the archives!
I also found the low bow that Ichabod gave the lady that he was meeting with a tad awkward. I know that Ichabod is grateful for the lady’s help and advice, but maybe a small bow and an expression of gratitude (e.g. saying “thank you”) would be more, to use Walter O’Brien’s words, efficient.
Overall, this was an okay episode. The characters learned that it’s best not to keep secrets from each other lest they put themselves or any of the others in grave danger. I’m glad that Ichabod told Abbie his secret and got the closure he needed. I was shocked to find out that Abbie and Jenny’s father, whom the sisters haven’t seen since they were kids, is alive and living in Saratoga, N.Y. I didn’t even know the Mills sisters still had a father until I watched this episode (very sneaky, writers. Very sneaky indeed).
The Witnesses also figured out that the bookish lady at the train station coffee shop (which never existed in the first place) is none other than Pandora, and that she has been the one behind all the supernatural occurrences, giving the Witnesses an opportunity to come up with a plan to defeat her. Wonder what it will be.
