Sleepy Hollow: Malcolm is Alive. Molly Channels Inner Red Riding Hood.

Sleepy Hollow

To paraphrase Ichabod’s words to Jenny: Evil tend to flare up just when you think it’s existence is no more. This sums up every single episode of Sleepy Hollow thus far. Doesn’t matter how many evil creatures Team Witness defeats, more will pop up in their place. In tonight’s episode, things take an interesting turn as the show takes a page out of the Grimms brother’s book.

Ichabod’s fascination with modern-day toys in this episode amuses me greatly. The toys of today certainly put the toys of the past to shame. We have robots that transform, dolls that speak and cars that you can drive with a remote. If the children from the Colonial Era had toys like we do, their parents would most likely go bankrupt.

I chuckled when Molly busted Ichabod for stashing away her birthday presents in the coat closet. The latter tried to cover the fact by saying that he’s looking for a misplaced coat. Right, like Molly would believe that. Nice try, though, Mr. Crane. You get an A for effort. The part where Ichabod helped Molly with her history homework was amusing as well. The whole “We the People” rant by Ichabod made me roll my eyes (in a good way). When it comes to history, Ichabod Crane is your man.

When a mystery man showed up at Agent Thomas’ doorstep, I was curious to find out who he is. It turns out that he is Molly’s father, Mitch Talbott. Though looks can be deceiving because this Mitch isn’t the real Mitch, but a werewolf monster called a Barghest. The creature can take on the form of a person that others would trust and find familiar. I, along with Agent Thomas, got the shock of our lives when we found out the real identity of this pretend Mitch Talbott. You got me this time, Sleepy Hollow writers. History won’t repeat itself again!

I totally applauded Molly’s quick thinking when she realized that her father isn’t her father. She used the bathroom emergency excuse as her escape plan, which worked to an extent. The Barghest turned back to its monstrous form and almost got it’s claws on Molly when Ichabod and Agent Thomas came to the rescue. I still can’t believe that Plymouth Rock is a magical seal for the Barghest. Leave it to the writers to come up with that fantastical tidbit.

Meanwhile, Malcolm Dreyfuss is alive and well. He returned to his company just when the other executives are about to implement a corporate take-over. During his conversation with Jobe, who escaped from the Masonic Cell that Jenny trapped him in, his eyes turned black. It could very well be a side effect of his current immortality state, but it could be something else altogether.

Speaking of Jobe, how did he manage to escape from the lantern that captured him in the previous episode? Did the magical ability of the lantern wear off or was the demon too powerful to be contained in it for long? Also, why was he buck naked? He’s not a Terminator! That and when Jenny released him in exchange for help finding Molly, he wore a suit before disappearing into thin air. I suppose that’s one way to get dressed. I have a feeling that Jobe might be able to help Team Witness in some way to deal with Malcolm, but then again, not all demons have a heart. Yes, I’m looking at you, Mazikeen. You, my demoness friend, have a heart.

Some side notes before I end this review. I get that Agent Thomas wants to take her daughter’s place as Witness, but apparently, that didn’t work out too well. Molly ended up looking for answers on her own which might have led to the appearance of the Barghest. At least she agreed to be honest with her little girl, so that’s a good start. The one thing about tonight’s episode that confused me is the whole taking young girls’ hearts thing. Why take the heart? Is the Barghest going to do something with it like devour it? I do not compute.
