In what was a preposterous statement, Kyrie Irving drew a ton of buzz during the NBA’s All-Star weekend in claiming that the Earth was flat. Amazingly that buzz didn’t just involve people making fun of Irving online or debating his “theory.” It also drew support from additional players. Irving’s original claim included “Can you really think of us rotating around the sun, and all planets align, rotating in specific dates, being perpendicular with what’s going on with these ‘planets’ and stuff like this?”
Since that statement players Wilson Chandler and Draymond Green came out and also said they believed the earth was flat. It got so absurd than even NBA commissioner Adam Silver chimed in saying he believed the Earth was round and that he felt Kyrie Irving was making a social commentary about fake news. As far as we know, Irving still thinks the Earth is flat. And today I’m sorry to say we have another former NBA player who’s a flat Earther as well. It’s none other than Shaq. Yes, it’s true. Here’s Shaq’s direct quote from a radio show made this week:
“It’s true. The Earth is flat. The Earth is flat. Yes, it is. Listen, there are three ways to manipulate the mind – what you read, what you see and what you hear. In school, first thing they teach us is, ‘Oh, Columbus discovered America,’ but when he got there, there were some fair-skinned people with the long hair smoking on the peace pipes. So, what does that tell you? Columbus didn’t discover America. So, listen, I drive from coast to coast, and this s*** is flat to me. I’m just saying. I drive from Florida to California all the time, and it’s flat to me. I do not go up and down at a 360-degree angle, and all that stuff about gravity, have you looked outside Atlanta lately and seen all these buildings? You mean to tell me that China is under us? China is under us? It’s not. The world is flat.”
Now I feel really stupid about writing articles about how much I like Shaq and how I’ve been impressed with his humor as well as business acumen. I just don’t know how I can possibly respect Shaq anymore after reading this. Yeah I still love the big guy and we share the same birthday but I really hope that Ernie, Kenny, and Charles grill him on this.
Say it ain’t so Shaq. Please, just say it ain’t so.
