‘Shadowhunters’, which is also known as ‘Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments’, is a supernatural drama series that has been developed by Ed Decter. The series is based on the series of novels ‘The Mortal Instruments’ by Cassandra Clare. The third season of the series premiered on March 20, 2018. Some of those who star in this series include Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rossende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubla, Isaiah Mustafa, and Harry Shum Jr. While the actors of the series are now predominantly associated with ‘Shadowhunters’, most of them already had an acting career before starring in this supernatural drama and it may surprise you to learn what they did before. In ‘Shadowhunters’, Katherine McNamara plays the lead role of Clarissa’Clary Fray’ Fairchild. Prior to working on this series, McNamara had a long career in the theatre that began when she appeared on Broadway at the age of just 13. She was in ‘A Little Night Music’ along with Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Before playing Luke Garroway, Isaiah Mustafa appeared in television commercials for ‘Old Spice’, while Dominic Sherwood was in a Taylor Swift music video before he joined the cast to play the role of Jace Heondale.
Just like McNamara, Alberto Rosende has also enjoyed a career in musical theater as he once starred in the role of Link Larkin in the famous musical ‘Hairspray’. He now plays the role of Simon Lewis. Another musically gifted cast member is Harry Shum Jr, who formerly played Mike Chang in ‘Glee’. Cassie Clare, the writer of ‘The Mortal Instruments’ series of books saw his performance on ‘Glee’ and decided he was perfect for ‘Shadowhunters’. This was how he landed the role of Magnus Bane.
There are some of the actors who you might recognize from their roles in other television series or films. Matthew Daddario, who plays Alec Lightwood, once starred in ‘Delivery Man’. He played the role of Channing who was one of Vince Vaughn’s children. In ‘Shadowhunters’, Alan van Sprang plays the role of villain Valentine Morgenstern. He is already accustomed to taking on villainous roles as he also played King Henry in ‘Reign’.
If you have a good memory, you might remember John Cor appearing in the second episode of ‘Suits’ when he played a poor guy called Tom who is being harassed about his fantasy football site by Louis Litt. He now plays the rather different role of Hedge Starkweather in ‘Shadowhunters’.
Someone who started his acting career rather young was David Castro, who plays Raphael in the supernatural drama. He got his first acting job at the age of just five when he appeared in a commercial for ‘SpongeBob’. Since then, he has had much better acting jobs, including ’27 Dresses’ and ‘The Little Fugitive’.
Emeraude Toubia, who plays Isabelle, became a cast member in a rather different way as she was initially pursuing a career as a model. She was one of the models who appeared in the reality competition series ‘Model Latina’. Her appearance in this attracted the attention of those casting for ‘Shadowhunters’ and she got the role.
