It’s kind of hard to say goodbye to someone that’s been around for so long, especially when it’s been 12 seasons. Dennis Reynolds though is taking off to star in another show called AP Bio with Patton Oswalt. Whether he really wants to leave or not is unknown but the scheduling conflicts that would be likely to arise could make things very difficult. It’s still going to be difficult to watch him leave, though Charlie Day think that he might come back eventually.
If he does the chances are that he’ll come back more or less as a guest star, and in a way that would make fans holler with joy at seeing him at least one more time. A lot of stars throughout the years have done this. It’s either been a ploy to make people think they’re coming back or one last big hurrah on a series that elevated them to fame. In Dennis’ case it might not happen for a while but if it does it could mean that his current show fell through or that he decided to make an appearance because it was needed for the show.
It’s kind of an unfair tease for Charlie Day or anyone to say that they think he might come back, because that tends to get really diehard fans pumped as they expect at any moment a character to come walking on screen with a big smile as though to say “just kidding!” before explaining why they did what they did. This time though that’s not likely to be the case since there is a definite goal that Dennis is headed towards. Sometimes you’ve got to go where the money and the fame is, and in some cases you do things because you gave your word and feel the need to live up to that obligation.
Whatever the case is with Dennis it’s kind of obvious that he found something better and a little more worth his time, or perhaps his story arc in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia was coming to a close without enough people realizing it. This does happen, actors don’t have enough material to keep their stories going and thus have to find something else to latch onto in order to keep that fan base happy and supportive. People aren’t going to keep thinking an actor is that great if they just up and quit without a reason or word that they’ll appear on another series. In an industry that’s driven by how much the fans love the characters most actors realize that they need to keep working in order to fulfill their dream and keep their current lifestyle.
There might be a good chance we’ll see Dennis again, especially given that actors coming back to sitcoms is fairly normal. There’s always the chance that a favorite will come back for an episode or a moderately long stay so that they can complete a story arc. It’s been done before and could be done again. Don’t worry to much about Dennis leaving, we could see him again somewhere down the line.
