For a convention that started as a gathering of comic and sci-fi geeks, San Diego Comic Con has certainly grown over the years. In 2000’s it became the place for presentations of new sci-fi and comic based movies. Now, the con evolves into the place for promotion of sci-fi and comic based television. Yes, the comic books that started it all are still there, but the convention has clearly morphed. For the complete list of presentations and panels at this summer’s San Diego Comicon (SDCC 2017) check the SDCC Blog. SDCC happens 19-23 July in San Diego,CA and are some panels that jumped out at me.
DC television superheroes. Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow will each have a special video presentation with Q & A panels including cast members and producers. So, will iZOMBiE, Gotham and Lucifer. Legends, Lucifer, Arrow and iZOMBiE particularly blew up their shows in the closing moments of recent season finales. In the case of Arrow, that was literal. But these shows left fans with particularly exciting cliffhangers to be discussed at this summer’s SDCC panels. Heck, even upcoming shows like Krypton, Black Lightning and Young Justice will be there. Young Justice season 3 has recently recorded several episodes worth of dialog. So, there’s hope that show will return in some format, regardless of what happens with platforms.
Marvel television superheroes. The In-Humans from Marvel’s broadcast network television universe will have a panel. The Netflix side of the Marvel television universe will also be represented with a panel on The Defenders. Marvel Animation will also have a panel. The X-Men side of Marvel will be presented by Fox and FX as well, with panels on The Gifted and Legion. We don’t know whether Agents of SHIELD will be there or not, but let’s face it, with Disney’s D23 in Anaheim, CA, the week before SDCC, they can release everything at their own con.
Other Exciting upcoming shows. The Orville will be there. Created by Seth MacFarlane, The Orville stars Mr MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki and Penny Johnson Jerald. Featuring directors like Jon Favereau, Jonathan Frakes and Brannon Braga, this show looks to be hilarious and exciting. Syfy’s Wynonna Earp will have a panel at SDCC, as will The Magicians, and The Expanse, no doubt featuring the showrunners and primary casts. Amazon is looking to get some major publicity for its remake of The Tick at SDCC. NBC’s supernatural mystery, Midnight Texas will also have a panel at SDCC 2017. This writer saw the pilot for Midnight Texas at the ATX Television Festival and Q&A with showrunner and two stars. I’m sure the Midnight Texas panel will be highly entertaining. From across the Pond, BBC will present panels on Doctor Who and Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. And there’s going to be a little something called Star Trek: Discovery featured as well.
